Beginning Jan. 22, 2018, travelers from nine states will no longer be able to travel with only their driver’s licenses.
Residents of Kentucky, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Washington will have to use alternate ID forms (passport, military ID, or permanent resident card) to pass TSA security checkpoints—even for domestic travel.

That is under the jurisdiction of the states so it’s a state issue. The states
under GOP leadership need to push for tighter voting laws in their state.
California gets new federal law compliant drivers licenses as of January 2, 2018. In order to get one you have to show up at a Department of Motor Vehicles office with proof of birth date (passport or birth certificate), proof of California residency (two documents) and a Social Security card.
The current California license can be used until October, 2020.
I did read it after I asked.
It still makes no sense because some states are willing to give illegals driver’s licenses.

Here in Washington state three years ago my business traveling companion and I had to show our passports on our way to Denver.
I am pretty sure every traveler had to show passport. Maybe it was Colorado that required that I.D. all those years ago?
I get that it’s the construction of the card (hologram or something) rather than the procedures one must use to obtain it.

Pennsylvania was simply unwilling to make a wholesale change for Fedzilla on their schedule. My license just expired and got replaced with a compliant ID as will others when they expire. Our local DMV is actually very well run . . . I was in an out in less than 30 minutes on a SATURDAY afternoon. They close on Monday so they can open Saturday for working people. Imagine that!
