Inside the NYC schools critics call ‘failure factories’
NYP ^ | September 2, 2017 | Susan Edelman

They are the schools Mayor de Blasio doesn’t mention.

At 32 city elementary and middle schools, the average English-math proficiency rate on state exams has not exceeded 10 percent of students for four years in a row.

Seventeen of these schools — which enroll nearly 10,000 kids — have been part of the mayor’s signature Renewal program, which has spent $582 million on teacher training, social services and an extra hour a day of instruction. Four did so poorly that the city Department of Education closed them in June.

...

Families for Excellent Schools, a pro-charter-school group that analyzed the test scores, blasted the 32 “failure factories,” saying they “prove that thousands of the city’s neediest kids have yet to see any meaningful improvement since the start of the de Blasio administration.”

...

Two of the failing schools share buildings with successful, and popular, charters. PS/MS 149 Sojourner Truth in Harlem, where 5 percent of 256 kids passed math and 13 percent passed English language arts, is dwarfed by the flagship Success Academy charter, where 92 percent of 1,161 students passed math and 80 percent passed ELA.

That's because NYC is run by self-superior, bigoted, racist Republicans who don't want to see people succeed in life, especially minorities, so they'll be dependent on Republicans' generosity with other people's money for the rest of their lives.

Wait. NYC IS run by self-superior, bigoted, racist Republicans who don't want to see people succeed in life, especially minorities, so they'll be dependent on Republicans' generosity with other people's money for the rest of their lives, isn't it?

Students who don’t want or care to perform. won’t, no matter what you do for them or to them.

Most kids who go to charter or private schools either want to learn or have concerned parents who want them to learn.

I'm sure it has been very helpful that DeBlASSio is harassing or otherwise forcing veteran teachers out the door, to be replaced with kids right out of college. And then they aren't giving them tenure. These newbies last a couple of years, then leave. So you have a revolving door of constantly new inexperienced teachers in a profession where you need a stable staff. At the same time, Bloomberg and then the current dumba@@ have given a vast amount of power to the students, power that they cannot handle. It's equivalent to having given a loaded pistol to a 5 year old. They have actively encouraged the students to write (nearly always fabricated) statements of teachers saying or doing things they never did, causing them to be brought up on charges and in some cases fired. Teachers are never believed, but students looking for "get back" at being asked to put their phones away, being failed for not doing any work, etc. are ALWAYS believed by the NYC Dept. of Education. It's a sick system, and this article is pointing out the fruit of such stupidity. You don't throw away hundreds of years of classroom experience to get cheap newbies who will be eager to carry out "progressive" garbage like Commie Core which doesn't work.

The media constantly says we need to have that big talk about race. Great idea! Let’s do. And inner city “failure factories” need to be topic #1.

I have heard this from teachers before. So much depends on the home environment of students, and it is unfair to expect teachers to be able to solve that problem.

Was this supposed to be a SARC? Because you forgot the tag. NYC is run by a bunch of dummocraps, and since the dummocrap party is now really the communist party, you have a progressive's wet dream and a realist's nightmare going on.

Catholic schools have been successful with kids from chaotic backgrounds anyway, by stressing confidence in childrens’ potential, and high standards.

Also enforcing discipline. A kid can’t learn in a chaotic environment.

As someone who went to 16 years of Catholic school, I will agree with you.

But public schools to some extent have their hands tied because they are not as free to promote a particular set of values.

When we were a largely white, Protestant country, this was less problematic for public schools because of widely held shared beliefs. That is no longer the case.

I spent quite a few years teaching in urban high schools. Oh, the stories I could tell. Anyway, in even the worst ones, I’d say that at least 75% of the kids would be willing to give learning try.

If you took your time with them, and were patient, your could make progress. Some of my fondest memories as a teacher are working with those kind of students. Since they knew so little, every advancement was a big deal.

So why are the scores so low? It’s that remaining 25%. Those kids are chronically disruptive. They will do more than just not pay attention. They will talk on their cellphones in class, get up and walk around, push other kids, etc. And if they are feeling particularly feisty, they will threaten you.

The administration will not remove those kids from the classroom. That would be politically incorrect. So you, the teacher, must play cop all day. It’s very difficult to teach when playing cop.

But but but...DeBlasio improved the schools by introducing two new holidays to the school calendar: Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.

Test scores were supposed to rise after that - and if they didn’t that meant there were still too many white or Christian holidays that need to be eradicated.

Christmas is now “Winter Holiday,” Abe Lincoln and G. Washington have been downgraded to “President’s Day” (one day instead of two) and Easter is now “Spring Holiday.”

You mean to tell me this didn’t work to improve the schools?

I’m shocked...shocked...

The entire USA education system has been destroyed by liberals. There is very little education left in any school; K-12 or college.

NYC government schools are deliberately packed with minority “teechers” who can’t even read.

People should go to prison for that.

Reading these accounts of humans mistreating humans casts a dark pale of sin on those responsible. The calloused disregard for humanity begins in gestation so it is no big deal to treat innocent children worse than they treat their pets.
