Chinese Official Says China Might Invade Taiwan If Peaceful Reunification Takes Too Long
In a recent interview Wang Zaixi (王在希), a former vice-chairman of Chinas Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said that Beijing might resort to the use of force if peaceful re-unification between China and Taiwan takes too long.
Wangs statements echo the increasingly assertive stance of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) towards the island since Xi Jinping took office in 2012.
In the interview Wang Zaixi stated that although the Taiwan question is a complex issue that must be resolved in the long term, there must be a sense of urgency towards cross-strait reunification.
Wang blamed Taiwans democratic process for slowing down the prospect of a peaceful solution of the cross-strait issue, arguing that because of the transfer of power from the pro-unification to the pro-independence coalition the possibility of peaceful unification is gradually being lost.
In 2014 and 2015 the Guomindang, Taiwans pro-unification party, suffered major electoral setbacks, losing the parliamentary majority to the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), which rejects rapprochement with China.

“You are aware that (declared or not) Taiwan has been a nuclear power since the early eighties, are you not?”
You’re right, Taiwan has had nuclear reactors providing electrical power for many years. The question is whether they’ve developed their own nuclear weapon, like quite a few other nuclear capable countries may or may not have, such as Japan, Germany, Italy, South Korea, etc. I maintain that it is time for these countries to acquire nuclear weapons, if they have not already done so, for their own protection and to stop relying on the United States to provide a nuclear umbrella for them. Attempts to stop nuclear proliferation have become totally counterproductive.
We need start the process to recognize Taiwan as a country. That sends an unequivocal message to the Chinese.
the magic negro funny!
I don't think Taiwan will go the way of Hong Kong. Would America go to war for it?
Message wont stop a billion Chinese. They are moving south.
Interesting they bring this up right now with the NK situation. Maybe they will use it for negotiations? Our media will go along with.
My guess: the Chinese will secretly offer a quid-pro-quo exchange. The two Koreas will be reunified under the South’s government in exchange for the two China’s being reunified under the mainland’s government.
Hardly fair: Shedding a failed state in exchange for picking up a prosperous one.
The mistake the Chinese are making is in showing their desire for Taiwan.
I think trade and bilateral migration are having an effect
India already did thwart them.
Not what I was talking about in any way.
Taiwan was detonating test warheads in 1983 and the reds were getting rattled.
Reagan held talks with Taiwan, and the weapon testing stopped,
The scuttlebutt at Kadena airbase at the time was that since they had working warheads anyway Reagan had traded rhem proven designs in exchange for ending their live testsl
In no way do I believe any such nonsense as Taiwan just scrapping their alrady functional nuclear weapons program at the height of the cold war.
Hey,
I didn’t invent that one.
A liberal journalist did such early in the Obammy years
By force.
Thanks TLR. Interesting item; much appreciated.
