Trump hugs children, serves food in visit to victims of Harvey

HOUSTON, Sept 2 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump flew to Houston on Saturday to meet with victims of Hurricane Harvey and see the effects of the record-setting storm while he presses for a multi-billion-dollar aid package.

Trump, facing the first natural disaster of his administration, was joined by his wife, Melania, as he passed out food and hugged, kissed and played with children at Houston's NRG Center, a 700,000-square-foot (65,000 square meter) facility that is now the city's largest emergency shelter.

Trump, who is making his second trip to the stricken state this week, asked Congress late on Friday for an initial $7.85 billion for hurricane recovery efforts. The request comes as Washington faces tough budget negotiations.

Trump told reporters at the center that his administration was moving fast to provide the financing for aid to the devastated region.

"We are signing a lot of documents to get money," he said.

Trump appeared relaxed as he posed for photographs with volunteers and chatted with those relocated to the shelter alongside Texas Governor Greg Abbott.

Melania, the sleeves of her blue denim shirt rolled up, hugged a woman and chatted with a child.

"It has been a wonderful thing," Trump said of his meetings with the children as he helped serve food to evacuees amid shouts of "Thank you, sir."

My brother is working in Rockport, he said the destruction is unbelievable. He has seen the results of many disasters, including Katrina.

Aw! I pity the poor fake media. Nothing to report on since POTUS is doing such a stellar job in Texas compared to Bush II and I'd-rather-play-golf Boobamba? So sad.

So Melania gave the media somethnig highly significant to report on -- a chance to do save the public from high heels! Why this issue is as suspicious of Watergate! I'll bet those stilletto heals were made in collusion with a racist, unqualified, and unhinged Russian slave. Never mind if Melania is guilty or not. Call for an investigation: the seriousness of the charge warrants it.

The wonderful thing is this petty PC attack will come back to haunt them around voting time. Trump and Melania are simply the best trollers of the Fake Media.

More MAGA winning! BTW DJT, not tired of it yet.

I remember watching some of the people in the coliseum after Katrina complaining about cold sandwiches instead of hot food.

Oh, I missed that you are in Mississippi. I saw a woman in Houston today that had to get her child and move to a different shelter for their safety. She said that the shelter she was in was mostly Katrina refugees, and she didn’t know if they had PTSD or what, but they were all fighting and stealing .

He is an insurance adjuster, working commercial claims. He has been a Catastrophe claims adjuster for many years. He said it is especially sad to him because he was at Corpus Christie when he was in the Navy and that is not far from Rockport. He told me he remembered the people being great, and said they still are wonderful people. They keep trying to get him food and water and they are the ones that lost everything.

You get your share of bad weather there but at least you avoided this one. I live in San Angelo, away from the big cities.
