Two decades ago today - Saturday August 30th 1997 - the ex-wife of the heir to the throne flew in to Paris with her new Egyptian boyfriend after a Mediterranean holiday on his yacht. They dined at his dad's showpiece, the Ritz, and shortly after midnight left via the rear entrance and got into a Mercedes driven by the hotel's deputy head of security. He was drunk, and in the underpass at the Place d'Alma he lost control of the car. Diana, Princess of Wales was pronounced dead at 4am on Sunday August 31st. She was 36.
The clip below shows a CNN anchorman introducing the BBC's formal announcement. The contrast in styles is noticeable: To the CNN guy, this is a bigtime A-list celebrity death; to a visibly shaken Martyn Lewis at the Beeb, the bald factual recitation is not an ending - the termination of a life - but a beginning ... of something strange and unknown. The week that followed was one of the most bizarre in modern British history:

True. But the negative reaction to it was also ugly.

Yeah, we don’t give a damn at Free Republic either.
It can go both ways, but after a while it was so over the top, I honestly came to really despise the situation.
I had the displeasure of watching some women just go catatonic over it. Sorry, that drove me bonkers.
As I said, I was very sorry to hear of her untimely death, but she didn’t represent anything much worth emulating.
My sister is one of those. She has a genuine British pub sign with Queen Victoria on it on an easel in her bedroom and loves it when we send her videos about the royals and memorabilia we find at car boot sales and thrift shops. Makes it very easy for us to get her presents.
Spain has no welfare system like America or the larger European countries, not even for their own people. Lots of migrants land here but most immediately hoof it to the French border.
They thought the same thing when Edward gave up the throne for Mrs. Simpson but it turned out that it was more of a mistress/slave relationship. Not unusual for men with great power being attracted to women who will put them in their place.
Brits love horses and Parker-Bowles fit the bill.
Interesting read, thanks for posting. Was the limo driver really drunk? I don’t remember hearing that before. He survived, didn’t he?
Gianni Versace was murdered by a crazed homosexual who went on a short nationwide killing spree.
What’should really interesting, at least to my mind, is that AFTER Diana was pulled from the wreck, it took around 1.5 hrs for the ambulance crew to make it to the hospital. A journey that should only have taken a few minutes.
She's a skanky slut for cheating on him, but he gets a pass for cheating on her with Camilla?
The French police said he had a very high BAC and was not wearing a seatbelt. He didn't survive.
Someone survived, was it the body guard? Whoever it was was badly hurt, but not killed and I do remember that person WAS wearing a seat belt.
What a disgrace to be a professional limo driver and DUI.
It was the bodyguard, and he was the only one in the car who wore a seatbelt.
What a disgrace to be a professional limo driver and DUI.
A disgrace, a crime and a sin.
And it's absolute garbage.
He's a devout Christian. He does tend to keep reasonably quiet about the exact nature of his beliefs but they are not secret. He's drawn to Eastern Orthodoxy, in particular the Greek Orthodox faith of his father's family. As he will be Supreme Governor of the Church of England, he's not really free to formally convert or I think he would. This is also part of the reason he keeps quiet about it.
He has made a number of quiet pilgrimages to a Greek Orthodox monastery over the years and he has what amounts to a Greek Orthodox shrine in his own home adorned with icons.
"Oh," said a voice from the back of the room, "just bung on the new Wham! album."
LOL! Diana ... I don't know what to make of her. Was she naive in marrying Charles and didn't realize the responsibilities and way of life she was committing to? Or just too young to take all that on, later deciding this wasn't for her? It's tragic that she died so young...
And the big question: was she pregnant at the time of her death?
I don't think she was any of those things but for some reason she certainly had an effect on people.
