The Justice Department has provided special counsel Robert Mueller with an early draft of a letter detailing President Trump's rationale for firing former FBI Director James Comey, The New York Times reported Friday.
The May letter, written by Trump and adviser Stephen Miller, was ultimately blocked by White House counsel Don McGahn, who believed some of its contents were problematic.
Instead, a different letter written by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein was sent, pinning the dismissal on Comey's handling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton's private email server.
Mueller is currently conducting a wide-ranging investigation into Russian interference in the presidential campaign, including whether the president obstructed justice by firing Comey, who was previously in charge of the probe.
It is unknown how much of the rationale in the original letter focused on the Russia investigation. Shortly after Comey's May 9 dismissal, the president told NBC's Lester Holt that the probe had been on his mind when he made the decision to fire the FBI director.
Regardless of recommendation, I was going to fire Comey, Trump said during an interview on "NBC Nightly News," adding "there was no good time to do it."
And in fact, when I decided to just do it, I said to myself, You know, this Russia thing with Trump and Russia is a made up story, he said.
Miller, a former aide to Attorney General Jeff Sessions when he was in the Senate, reportedly drafted the letter at Trump's request during a weekend in May at the president's Bedminster, N.J., golf club.

Sessions and his sidekick Rosenstein are working for the deep state. They are actively trying to sabotage Trump. No other explanation.
The director of the FBI serves at the pleasure of the chief executive, the president. Just ask Bill Clinton who fired the FBI director who was investigating him.
Secondly, firing a corrupt cop is not problematic at all.
Comey ran a fraudulent and knowingly sabotaged the Hillary investigation. He had every reason to fire the clown.
Trump must have written this draft letter in December 2016.
IMHO, this is all quickly heading towards a flash point. Comey’s sham investigation revelation should be cause of serious concern for all criminally involved — their cover is now officially blown.
He has a G damn nerve investigating Comey’s firing. If he’s peddling that crap he’s a total dirt bag. Comey should be indicted this is absurd.
Maybe Trump can fire Mueller for compromising the investigation with leaks.
If there was ever fake news, it is spending time and ink on letters never sent. The democrats-with-bylines that are today’s media would have excoriated Eisenhower for the press release he wrote in case of an Allied failure at Normandy.
Seems way past time for a funeral for Jeff Sessions to held, like he has been dead for at least six months now.
At Trump’s request.
I'd love to know if Comey called his good friend and mentor Bob Mueller over any of this. I find it very hard to believe that he didn't contact Mueller to get advice on how he should word his conclusion on Hillary before the investigation was even completed, especially in light of the fact that he had to meet with Mueller before his Senate Intel Hearing.
Sessions is in some swamp creature’s service. Otherwise he’d have taken the hint when Trump lit into him publicly a few months back.
The article says it was written in May.
argumentum ad ignorantiam
Trump made his issues with Sessions public. Sessions gave him the middle finger. Jeff knows congress plus the MSM have his back. Trump can’t fire him unless he wants the rest of his first term engulfed in never ending blowback.
Another day, another leak from Robert “the Sieve” Mueller.
Comey is 100% discredited, and the “investigation” of Clinton has been exposed as a sham. If Mueller can’t stop leaking constantly for political spin purposes, he needs to resign due to incompetence.
agree- not getting involved in Russian investigations in one thing but not speaking out about leaks is another...
it would be great to see Trump release the letter..
So Justice gives Mueller a draft of a letter that wasn’t sent. WTH? How can a rejected draft of a letter that was never sent have any legal consequences?
