Fire, Dust Storms, and Scorching Heat: This Year's Burning Man Sounds Like the End of Days

Visitors to the Burning Man festival are really getting to live out their Mad Max dreams this year. But it isn’t so much post-apocalyptic as it is just apocalyptic. Dust storms and a heat wave ensured that it was going to be a rough event from the beginning, and now an enormous wildfire has shut down the main road that accesses the week long celebration.

Attendees have been gathering in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada since Sunday to install art projects, construct camps, fire up sound systems and, ya know, burn. Within days of their arrival, dust storms started kicking up, prompting a temporary closure of the main gates out of safety concerns.

And the cheap tkts were around $380 and went up from there to thousands. Awesome. Supposed to be 100+ degrees this weekend for closing ceremonies and the BIG burn. We've already spotted some of the uh, shall we say, 'less resilient' burners already back in town. Guess they'll miss part of the "experience". Not hurting me though.

Catching his breath, Zac said, “There’s a big ass dust storm coming, bigger than shit.”

Roberts turned to Valdo. “This is your lucky day. You’re about to witness your first haboob.”

“Ha-what?”

“Haboob. That’s an Arabic word.”

“What does it mean?”

“It means big ass dust storm.”

Valdo stepped outside to see the haboob. The sky to the east was dark, the sun blotted out by a cloud of brown dust rising up incredibly high—thousands of feet, roiling and billowy, reaching from as far as he could see to the north to as far as he could see to the south. It was magnificent. He couldn’t take his eyes off it.

But it was moving. Fast. In his direction.

Before he could turn away, a wall of dust and sand enveloped him and everything around him. A continuous blast of hot wind was blowing debris at almost freeway speed. Tumbleweeds and plastic bags were flying past him, catching on the truck and sticking to it before peeling off and blowing away. It was smothering him, so he covered his face with his coat sleeve and stepped back into the doorway. Just before he closed the door, out of the corner of his eye, he spotted something on the truck: the driver’s door was partway open and a man’s leg was sticking out. Valdo yelled, “Somebody’s stealing the truck,” and jumped to the ground.

Fire, Dust Storms, and Scorching Heat: This Year's Burning Man Sounds Like the End of Days

Probably the perfect place for this bats**it crazy, dysfunctional drug-crazed wacky crowd.

And they're doing it voluntarily!

I do feel truly sorry for the children who are dragged into that infernal environment.

Nuh uh. They’re PAYING to be burned. And paying BIGLY. So, the “anti-establishment” festival is makin’ some bank on the event. Which of course is the point. At least for the organizers who will claim they didn’t make anything.

Thanks. Sounds like a bunch of liberal feel good stuff to me.

They are hypocrites. Leave the environment in better shape than they found it? What is the carbon footprint of Burning Man? How many noxious fumes spew from the actual burning man? Who cleans up the ashes from the burning man? Is it really cleaner than they found it when they are looking done?

Who the heck pays all that money to go to this thing?? If they are rejecting corporatism and all that? What do the participants do for a living that they can afford it? And do they earn a living from corporatism so they can then go reject it at burning man?

Do some dudes go there hoping to get girls?

Where do you live out there? I worked at Empire, NV for 5 years and watched the freak show drive by every summer.

The organizers bought the ranch that has Fly Geyser on it recently, was disappointed to see that. It indicates the kooky idea crowd is encroaching on the more inhospitable places that folks like us consider refuges from them...

“Is burning man a gathering of liberals?”

Well, our youngest daughter is there and she’s a conservative. It really isn’t a political gathering anyway. My only problem is that I have to go to Reno on Sunday and wait for her to “come out” so we can bring her home.

Um, well, "get" has a lot of meanings...

“Do some dudes go there hoping to get girls?” Maybe at the orgy tent. Somebody did a pictorial last year and kind of an expose (brits?). Rules at the tent? Ladies and hetero couples welcome. Single guys......not so much. Once inside though.....whatever suited their fancy. Uh, yewwwwwww!

LOL! You mean you’re not gonna stick around for the after burn de-compression events in town? Hopefully the wild fire between the playa and Reno will be controlled enough to allow for a speedy exit from Gerlach heading south to town.

In Reno. People watching can be interesting. After it’s over there are usually folks looking for money or rides to get back to where they came from for a couple of weeks.

That fire, according to the news reports was put out several days ago. We’re not going all the way to Gerlach. She has a rental truck that she’s going to return in McCarran.

LOL! I wouldn’t want to drive against the traffic headed south from Gerlach. Or in it headed south either. Here’s a link from the reno gazette journal this morning about the fire:

Road appears to be open though.

I have family that go. It’s mostly libs but it’s not in your face. Unlike Dem gatherings they usually do an excellent job cleaning up, even ashes from cigarettes or campfires.

The beautiful and rich with their catered private camps are the biggest hypocrites of the bunch.
