US jobless claims rise marginally as labor market tightens

The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits rose slightly last week, pointing to sustained labor market strength that should continue to support the economy.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits increased by 1,000 to a seasonally adjusted 236,000 for the week ended Aug. 26, the Labor Department said on Thursday.

Data for the prior week was revised to show 1,000 more applications received than previously reported. Claims have now been below 300,000, a threshold associated with a robust labor market, for 130 consecutive weeks. That is the longest such stretch since 1970, when the labor market was smaller.

A Labor Department official said there were no special factors influencing the claims data and that no states had been estimated. But upcoming reports could be impacted by Tropical Storm Harvey, which has devastated parts of Texas.

The storm will probably leave some people temporarily unemployed and hamper the filing of claims.

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast claims rising to 237,000 in the latest week. The four-week moving average of claims, considered a better measure of labor market trends as it irons out week-to-week volatility, fell by 1,250 to 236,750 last week, the lowest reading since May.

They have to take into consideration the U6 rate.

Labor Force Participation rate is the statistic to look at.

I was looking at the job growth by sector this morning
Job growth for the year has been strongest in these two sectors.

Professional Services 382,000 jobs:
Professional services are occupations in the tertiary sector of the economy requiring special training in the arts or sciences. Some professional services require holding professional licenses such as architects, auditors, engineers, doctors and lawyers.

Private Education and Health Services 302,000 jobs:
Private Education Services: All industries in the sector share this commonality of process, namely, labor inputs of instructors with the requisite subject matter
expertise and teaching ability.
Health Services: All industries in the sector share this commonality of process, namely, labor inputs of health practitioners or social workers with the requisite expertise. Many of the industries in the sector are defined based on the educational degree held by the practitioners included in the industry.

Construction is third at 145,000 and manufacturing fourth at 137,000 for a combined total of 282,000.

Get the illegals out of the country....PERIOD!. Illegal “day workers” are (demanding and) making more than minimum wage and NOT paying taxes.

Remember when 5% was deemed to be “full employment?” That was until G W Bush started to regularly come in under 5% and Obama’s horrible record. And the media wonders why we hate them. BTW what’s wrong with 4.4% anyway?

Bet the libs can’t wait until the next numbers come out from Harvey’s displaced workers. They’ll also be praising illegals for helping out with construction work and doing jobs Americans refuse to do.

Went to Sonic today. The gal was clueless on how to take an order at the drive thru. She was clueless what a “diet” Dr. Pepper was. She was also clueless about the signs stating they were short on supplies coming in from Houston and couldn’t tell me what items they weren’t selling. Any hoo, it isn’t just gas supplies that will be problematic over the next few weeks.

“The report noted that contacts across a broad range of industries reported a shortage of qualified workers, which has limited hiring.”

Makes sense. With jobs becoming available, those on the sidelines not looking and not counted are now reentering the job market.
