There is a raging controversy within the University of Mississippis Greek Life community regarding race relations and bananas.
A Greek Life leader accidentally sparked mass hysteria after he placed a banana peel on a tree in the woods -- because he could not find a trash can.
The Daily Mississippian reports that three black students found the banana peel -- and were apparently triggered by what they saw.
"To be clear, many members of our community were hurt, frightened, and upset," the interim director of fraternity and sorority life wrote in a letter obtained by the newspaper.
The president of one sorority told the newspaper that "bananas have historically been used to demean black people."
I always thought bananas were historically used to make banana pudding.
It's unclear how many were triggered by the banana peel - but the fear and trepidation was so great that a meeting was convened at the campground. The Daily Mississippian described what happened:
"The massive discussion session wrapped up as more and more students stood and left the room - some in tears, some in frustration. NPHC members began texting friends to come and pick them up from the camp since no one had been allowed to drive his or her car up to the retreat. The remainder of the retreat was canceled later that night," the newspaper reported.
It sounds as if terrified Ole Miss students were stampeding through the woods weeping and wailing as they sought psychological refuge from the banana peel.
An Ole Miss spokesman confirmed there was some sort of incident.
We are aware of the situation and are working to address it through appropriate channels, the spokesman told me. Since we became aware of what occurred at the fraternity and sorority communitys retreat, UM staff acted quickly in an effort to engage in discussion with students.
Does that mean Ole Miss will ban racially-offensive fruit and vegetables from campus dining halls? Has there been a call to banish banana nut bread or ice cream sundaes or heaven forbid - banana pudding?
The young man who discarded the banana peel - profusely apologized and said he meant no harm but I doubt its going to make much difference.
"I want to sincerely apologize for the events that took place this past weekend," the student wrote in a letter to the newspaper. "Although unintentional, there is no excuse for the pain that was caused to members of our community."
In retrospect - the young man would have been better off just tossing the peel on the ground. It's better to be a litterbug than to be falsely accused of being a racist.
I imagine the only thing that could have possibly been more offensive -- would have been eating the banana while watching Gone with the Wind.
Ole Miss might have a couple of professors who are making that kind of salary but not many. If they do, they are probably bringing in 10-20 times that much annually in research grants. There's your justification.
Most professors at Ole Miss probably don't make much more in salary than a star football player gets in under-the-table payments from boosters and a small fraction of what the head football coach gets.
Actually Todd Starnes is wrong about that.
You should never throw a banana peel on the ground, because when someone steps on it, he or she can slip and break a leg.
My first, and final, thought is...”I don’t care!”.
If these “students” are so afflicted with an inferiority complex about being black that everything they see, or hear, is a “trigger”, then they need some serious therapy...not “reparations”.
They seem to be seeking out all of the stereotypical things that they used to bash “whitey” about, and turning them into “inanimate object racism”.
I’ve been eating bananas, watermelon, and fried chicken from a very young age...long before I knew they were stereotypically associated with blacks. That connection was originally made by journalists, cartoonist, Hollywood, and later TV.
As time passed, I got busier, and busier, just living and learning life...survival skills, like education, skills, and a trade. I guess I foolishly thought that everyone else was doing the same thing. /sarc
Since the 1960’s the minorities, and the liberal press, have had us walking on eggshells to avoid “doing” the wrong thing, or “saying” the wrong thing, lest we are rubber stamped as “racisits”.
Now we’re up to transgender “pronouns”, and other trigger words that light up the gay, and feminine movements.
I still refuse to live my life walking on eggshells to appease these, mostly ignorant, “groups”.
I refuse to live my one life, trying to pacify these overgrown adolescents who go radical while trying to get attention; “attention” is a drug to them, an addiction fostered by their parents in spoiling them rotten.
My children are grown, and are doing well...in part because I guided, disciplined, and instilled pride in them...not for being white, but for being good human beings.
The meme that blacks “cannot be racist” is a myth right up there with unicorns and the tooth fairy. It’s an excuse they have created (aided by the media) to give them totally immunity for being...well...”racists”.
When I read, “kill all white people”, and they tell me they’re “not racist”, I know where the total stupidity lies...and it ain’t all me.
People aren’t “groups”, people are individuals, and that’s how I treat them. Hiding behind a hate group is the cowards’ way to negotiate life. If they don’t have you outnumbered, outsized, or outgunned...they run like cowards. Individual bravery is non-existent.
So...cowards...run and tell “mommy” when you see a banana peel, a watermelon rind, or a chicken leg bone......I don’t care. They are totally inanimate objects, utilized by the whole human race since whenever. You don’t own them, and getting “offended” by them shows that you, too, believe in the same racial stereotypes as anyone else.
Is this satire?
Very, very common.
The frequent, “proper” and desired result of many of these Social Justice “protests” (and almost all of the enviro-sponsored EPA lawsuits nationally) is a mandated long-term “studies program” by the local “college” or university to “study the long-term effects of (fill in blank) on the regional (environment/local school/local district) to “prevent a re-occurrence”” of the original lawsuit.
Presto! Instant “mandated” employment for local professors and social justice warriors (with a convenient degree from the local college in social justice warfaring!
and break a arm, leg or foot
Profs with monster salaries are almost always coaches, administrators, or in medicine. None of those have very much directly to do with the number of students being talked bout. And most universities have huge endowments that pay the salaries of a lot of professors.
“Time after time they demonstrate, conclusively, that they are incapable of rational thought and logic and completely lack the ability to function as adults in a civilized society.”
Isn’t that what Lincoln said?
What am I to do with my watermelon rinds?
I better learn to not like watermelon. That will also be banned.
....
I cant wait until these coddled snowflakes get out of school and hit the job market and real life...
Careful what you wish for. Some of the older snowflake millenials are old enough to run for Congress, and the oldest ones will be old enough to run for the Presidency in 2020.
Sleep well with that thought.
Sometimes napalm can be your friend.
I can only imagine what the “Ole Miss” himself, Shep Smith is going to say about this.
Very true.
The irony is that these people ALSO believe that we need to elect "the best" people to government and then give those people unlimited power. Because an all-powerful government can create Utopia right here for us today.
Unfortunately, we are giving tremendous power to people with the worst intentions.
Oops.
I would hope by the time they got that old that they would have real life figured out but you are right, as long as employers continue to coddle them, some will never change. I live in a ‘right-to-work’ state that normally doesn’t put up with them. Most employers believe in ‘hire/fire at will’. There are always a few that learn to beat the system though and learn to get around company policies for a while.
Sure glad they didnt find a chicken leg....;)
Or a watermelon.
