The Trump administration moved Wednesday to reimpose work requirements for Americans on welfare, revoking an Obama-era policy that had urged states to apply for waivers exempting the poor from having to show they were either getting job training or looking for work.
Requiring work was a key part of the 1996 welfare reform law enacted by a GOP-led Congress and signed by then-President Clinton, and Mr. Trump’s move restores the law as written.

Remember we reduced so called welfare but INCREASED welfare with Earned Income Credit and other REFUNDABLE credits. Administered by IRS. We allowed another agency to administer welfare.

Unfortunately, that would backfire. "Conservative" pols are tripping over each other in a race to seen who can do the most to "cure" the opioid epidemic. If welfare recipients tested positive, they'd probably be enrolled in a rehab program, not have to work, and cost a fortune to try to rehabilitate. It would actually give them a reason to use drugs.
The best drug rehab program is a job and some responsibility.
