70,000 to be evacuated over WWII bomb in Frankfurt

Frankfurt am Main (AFP) - Some 70,000 people in Frankfurt will have to leave their homes this weekend in one of the biggest such evacuations in post-war Germany, police said Wednesday, after an unexploded World War-II bomb nicknamed "blockbuster" was uncovered.

The operation on Sunday will allow for the safe defusal of the 1,400-tonne British bomb, which German media said was nicknamed "Wohnblockknacker" (blockbuster) during the war for its ability to wipe out whole streets or buildings.

The unexploded bomb was discovered on Tuesday during building work a stone's throw from the Westend Campus of the Goethe University Frankfurt, police said in a statement.

Officers are guarding the site and there "is currently no danger".

There was a British produced show on public tv some years back
called: “Danger UXB”. It was about an unexploded bomb disposal unit
in WW2 London during the blitz. Highly recommend it.

The Europeans use a comma instead of a decimal point. We would say 1.400 tonne (3000 lb).

Surprised, it’s Frankfort, and not Patton Village Military Housing area in Stuttgart.

The UK uses the same number decimal and thousands separators as the US. So 1.4 in the UK is the same as 1.4 in the US.

On the Continent, thousands separators are either spaces or decimal points. The decimals separator is a comma. For example:

Norway: Our "4,294,967,295.00" is written as "4.294.967.295,000"
Sweden: Our "4,294,967,295.00" is written as "4 294 967 295,000"

Useful info: International Language Environments Guide

It appears this article was written by somebody on the Continent even though it doesn't show that attribution. Probably written by somebody in Germany and translated to English and the translator doesn't have a clue about this topic. A "1,400 tonne bomb" would translate correctly to US English as a "1.4 tonne bomb." A "tonne" is a metric ton or 1,000 kg, also 2,240 lb. So 1.4 x 2,240 = 3,136 pounds.

No matter the language, that's a big bomb!

The tonne (/tʌn/ ( listen)) (non-preferred SI derived unit; SI symbol: t), commonly referred to as the metric ton in the United States, is a non-SI metric unit of mass equal to 1,000 kilograms; or one megagram (Mg); it is equivalent to approximately 2,204.6 pounds, 1.10 short tons (US) or 0.984 long tons (imperial).

“There was a British produced show on public tv some years back called: “Danger UXB”. “

Some as in 30, maybe closer to 40? I remember watching it on Masterpiece Theatre with my parents, so that would put it in the early 80s, probably.

I do remember really enjoying it, much as I did “Foyle’s War” in more recent years.

Produced in 1979, apparently.
Hard to believe, that’s almost 40 years ago.
