Berkeley mayor Jesse Arreguin has called for authorities to tackle left-wing violence by classifying members of AntiFa, the loosely organized group of “anti-fascists” who believe that violence is acceptable in countering right-wing extremism, as a gang.

Berkeley police made ten arrests on Sunday, using tear gas to disperse black clad counter-protesters on several occasions, Newsweek reported from the protests Sunday.
Organizers had called off the “No Marxism in America” event earlier after strict police measures were introduced, but hundreds of counter-demonstrators and a small group of right-wing protesters gathered regardless. Mayor Arreguin said that new measures were required to tackle a violent fringe of left-wing demonstrators.
“I think we should classify them as a gang,” said Arreguin, as quoted by CBS. “They come dressed in uniforms. They have weapons, almost like a militia and I think we need to think about that in terms of our law enforcement approach.”
Arreguin said that although he does not support the far-right, tougher measures were required to counter left-wing violence, and called for non-violent protesters to take a stand.
In the wake of Charlottesville and Sunday’s unrest, Arreguin called for UC Berkeley to cancel a follow-up appearance by Yiannopoulos scheduled for September, during an event titled Free Speech Week.
“I believe that is the right thing to do,” said Arreguin. “And if they don’t do that, then they need to work with the city and potentially assist the city through resources to be able to adequately police what we know is going to be a large protest that will spill out onto the city streets.”

Interesting. Dem party leadership seems to have sent out an all hands message to cut ties and perception of ties with ANTIFA. But wonder what SOROS involvement is. Did he make the call, or are they acting independently? The Occupy movement met a similar fate; the PR cost was too great so they got cut out of the loop. The difference is that ANTIFA is an entrenched international organization that is fairly well organized and the most useful sort of useful idiots— the kind who are expendable and willing to do violence.
Sure, call them a gang, unless they are here illegally; then they are welcome to stay!

Fat chance of that. Until they can come up with a legitimate crime boss who they can prove led attacks, and they can get the ACLU out of their hair as the libs have used them so many times before to protect organizations just like this, they haven’t got a shot in the dark. And I can’t think of one politician at state or federal level from California that would even consider throwing away votes by opening their mouths against such an oppressed, misunderstood, and brave group of “California citizens” even though they are nothing more or less than terrorists.

I thought Jesse had told his city that he was a member of Antifa. There is really no hope for Berkeley (or any other city that houses a major university for that matter).
As an Engineering graduate of UCB (Class of 1965) I can tell you that at least from my long ago experience, that the agitators are NOT the current students, but rather Liberal Trash that lives on the fringes of the campus, never went to school there, and exist like a pack of festering sores, showing up for any “demonstration” anyone wants to have. Thankfully, the engineering profs were not cut from the Liberal cloth and that part of the campus where the Physical Sciences are taught are diametrically opposed to Sather Gate. In fact any number of my professors directly addressed the need for those of us in Engineering to stay away from the demonstrations lest we be unable to find a job following graduation.
I'm sure it's just a coincidence.

street gangs don’t have one “crime boss” either but different leaders in each city. Of course they can be considered a gang or terrorist organization. They organize, have websites, meeting places etc. Whether the pols have guts to do it is another story.

I think he sees the damage being done to what he perceives as the “legitimate” Left. Liberals are concerned with popularity and acceptance. They will flee the Left if the Left becomes the same as Antifa.

I assure you that is absolute fact, and the UC administration wouldn’t have them removed for any reason.
They are given free run of the place at all hours.
