I recall reading that before the movie was released, the NAACP or some similar group "vetted" the movie and some changes were made to address their concerns.
But the opinions of people born after the end of segregation count for more than those of people who had experienced prejudice and discrimination first-hand.

The next target will be John Wayne.

Tourism thrives on unsavory stuff. If you don't have a beach or snow, natural wonders or bright lights, what you end up selling is war and exploitation of one sort or another. Drop that and what are you left with?
Maybe you can successfully flip the narrative. People going to Salem Mass, identify more with the accused witches than with the Puritans. But take down the monuments and stop showing the movie and what's left?

I demand “The Ten Commandments” also not be shown as it glorifies the enslavement of my people by North Africans.

Don’t be showing Pepe Le Pew cartoons at that theater. Very insensitive to French people. Not even going to mention Speedy Gonzalez and Mexican outrage.
