Wow - Now experts are calling #Harvey a once in 500 year flood! We have an all out effort going, and going well!
Parts of Houston are flooding, but there is a lot of Houston that is doing just fine (at least right now).
Not a fan of Sylvester Turner, but he has been out all night, bringing food to his workers, coordinating with the county in a way never done before. Plenty to criticize on policies, but he’s doing everything reasonable to respond to Harvey.
At the county level, county commissioner Cagel (Republican) has been helping around the clock as well. He has spent a shift answering the pct 4 help line, been out with the road crew to have eyes on the situation (doing work, not a sight seeing tour).
The Houston area leadership seems to be putting aside the party differences to deal with Harvey. It is the right thing to do.
It’s very bad and not much relief in sight unless it stops raining soon, which doesn’t appear likely.
So the post that people went on a rampage about said officials were really expecting 50 inches of rain..not 24 like saying on public..

The EPA has a 47 page guide for waste water facilities for planning in the event if flooding. Hope folks in charge have read it.

Attics are death traps in a flood. Better off on the roof soaking wet where they can be seen.

Official came out and said dont call 911 if you are standing in a foot of water..not life threatening. Only call if in danger.

Ohmygosh. Being trapped in a flooded car is one of my worst nightmares. What did you do?
The worst damage I can imagine is flood damage. Everything is destroyed by the water and its aftermath. Afterwards, unless it's total disaster, you're stuck with drying things out and the repairs, in an area where houses have lost a lot of their value.
I pray for the people stuck there. For many of them, it just might be there were no good solutions, unless they decided to get in the car and go far away long before the most affected areas knew how bad it was going to be.
But where do all these people who are just barely making it go? There just are not enough shelters and where do you put the shelters to be out of the path of the rains and floods inland? We are talking millions of people. Probably at least 2 million who will be flooded. If the rain continues as forecast it will only be more and worse. Some people have cleaned up at least twice in the last two years and more before that. A lot have ZERO flood insurance. Yes, they had a choice to buy it but some flooded areas will have supposedly been safe. This is one of those once in a long time events.
Houston gets more development and more pavement and more covered areas but it really does not matter since there is no place for this much water to go.
This is bad and getting worse. Houston is a terrible place to build a city.
Wasnt trapped....I was in a weird area where the parking lot got it but residences were fine.but seeing pics right now is similar seeing water to top of hoods of cars.
Agreed, Aggie Mama. And I speak as someone (like you) who is sitting in Houston worried about the outcome of the flooding.
Even the folks who stayed and whose properties stay dry are gonna have issues if water and sewage go out and stay out for a while...
Anyone heard how Houston’s hospitals are faring?
