As a presidential candidate, Donald Trump praised autocrats and exhibited strongman tendencies. But as president of the United States, Trump is proving to be one of the weakest, most disinterested executives in memory. He seems happy even eager to be both operationally and ideologically marginalized inside his own administration.
This is, I think, the best way to understand the ouster of chief strategist Steve Bannon.
White House staff, congressional Republicans, military leaders, and executive branch officials are increasingly confident simply ignoring President Trump. After Trump tweeted that he wanted the military to ban transgender service members from serving, for instance, the Pentagon quickly said that it had not received an official order and was going to carry on with business as usual until it did. Similarly, after Trump tweeted his threats at North Korea, the key organs of American foreign policymaking the State Department, the Defense Department, and so on were quick to declare that nothing had changed, there was no military buildup or new red lines, and everyone should just ignore the commander in chiefs morning outburst.

Ezra Klein?
Is that creature still skulking about?
He believes in something that never existed.
Ezra Klein@ezraklein is an Ezra Klein.
Which is to say, a dope.
No it’s a garbage article by an idiot full of fury signifying nothing.
Yes, and he’s still taking LSD, I can see.
You wish Ezra you wish.
Vox?? The crap of the crap?
Full of excrement. But I bet it felt good coming out of his fingers.
If Trump is so weak why are his enemies losing their minds with rage
I think Trump needs to reevaluate what got him elected, at this point he will either be a Millard Fillmore or a Abraham Lincoln or Ronald Reagan.
Everyone is hoping for Reagan and i hope it is the case.
But the deep state if the biggest threat to his presidency.
Did you know that Millard Fillmore (who was never elected president) ran against Lincoln in 1860?
Trump is proving to be one of the weakest, most disinterested executives in memory.
Unmitigated Bullshit. Where do these idiots come from...under rocks?
Now you are pushing Ezra Klein?
Really?
Do you know who he is?
Anybody who holds Klein up as a voice of truth would probably prefer Cruz to Trump.
Jeeez... I can’t stand 90% of the posts on this forum any more.
Pure unadulterated Irish BS, i.e. mental masturbation.
It’s like non stop, 24/7.
I read the headlines, and that’s it.
Waist of time posting this crap, nobody reads it.
LOL!
It's like Reagan. They can't decide if Trump is an unspeakable menace destroying America, or a clueless dolt who isn't even in charge...
He’s excellent at trolling the left and shaping national discussion via Twitter. Super interesting how somebody this old has been the best demonstration of how to use this new media in politics.
I’m hoping he starts using it to actually push his agenda versus just annoy his enemies. I wish it was jarvanka and not bannon leaving the WH.
Trump is not now nor has he ever been an idealist. He is going to make deals, and some of those deals are going to be ugly.
Sessions is still there, which is going to tilt the board in favor of law enforcement. If we can end the falling/plunging living standards in this country, do something about our scary-high per person medical costs, do something about the small business environment which is a driver of inequity, Trump will have some major victories to his credit.
What were the chances of getting rid of TPP before he showed up?
