Facebook Inc. is lucky it owns Instagram.
This year, the worlds largest social network will see a decline among teen users in the U.S., according to a forecast by EMarketer. Its the first time the research company has predicted a fall in Facebook usage for any age group.
EMarketer predicts 14.5 million people from the ages of 12 to 17 will use Facebook in 2017, a drop of 3.4 percent from the prior year. Teens are migrating instead to Snap Inc.s Snapchat and Instagram, the photo-sharing app that Facebook owns, the research company said Monday in a statement.
Facebook has continued to grow around the world, with more than 2 billion users this year, but younger people are finding it less compelling, said Oscar Orozco, a forecasting analyst at EMarketer. The company needs to attract younger users so they build a Facebook habit that will carry into their adult years, when they become prime customers for Facebook advertising.

I don’t know any teens who use it, or even bother to sign up.
The ones I know already view FB like they do old rotary telephones
Apparently FB has become the ‘watercooler’ of the older generation...................
They’ve been saying this for about five years. Instagram is also seen as an old hat version of Snapchat.
Yes, it sounds like it is on the brink.
But 2 billion old people......................
Because Facebook has too many WORDS and words hurt their little minds.
It will be around awhile, in some form or another. Free Republic on the other hand, seems to be fading.
None of the teens-early 20s in our large relationship is on Facebook. That’s for old people.
I’m not a teen by a long shot, but I deactivated my Facebook account along with Twitter and other social apps. I also ditched my Apple Watch and FitBit and most everything else snitching on me or controlling my day.
All I had was FB, and I deleted it in June................too much crap going on there......................
"I avoid investing in anything that can be replaced with a new platform developed by a bunch of guys in a garage over a long weekend."
It will linger on. MySpace is still around - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myspace
Yeah. None of my grandchildren use it anymore and haven’t for years.
I am surprised that Gooooooooooogle hasn’t come up with a rival platform...................
They tried and it did not work.
I never understood the attraction of Facebook.
I never quite “got” what is so great about it.
I understand wanting to share info and pictures etc with people. But I communicate with family and friends with email if I want to send pictures or send messages. So why do I need to do Facebook and set it up, and have a lot of things about myself available publicly, just to communicate with family and friends?
Or maybe I’m missing the whole point. Clearly it was a great business opportunity for Zuckerberg. That’s capitalism and good job for him. With so many users, clearly he tapped into something people felt a need for.
I doubt it. Facebook—unlike MySpace—figured out how to 1. do advertising on the service and 2. Made itself more and more useful, especially since they bought out Instagram in 2012 and pretty much took almost every feature of Snapchat by middle 2015.
Grandma and Grandpa finally adopt FB and the kids move on.....
It’s a platform for drama queens, self-centered attention whores and gossip mongers, so yeah, it fills a need...........
