On July 30, 2017, a 61-Year-Old, mild mannered musician, Darius Summers, walked down to the local gas station for a cup of coffee. He had recently obtained a concealed carry permit. Darius is not a large man.
A local miscreant “made” Darius, and saw that Darius was armed. He decided that he would rob Darius of his gun. It was a terrible mistake in the victim selection process. The store video shows what happened.
It did not turn out well for the large, armed, thuggish teenager. Darius lulled the suspect into a false sense of security. Then he accessed his pistol and shot the would be armed robber.
It was a nicely executed bit of misdirection. It illustrates the old saw: “Old age and treachery beat youth and skill.”
He said a 16-year-old boy armed with a gun saw that Summers was also armed, and the teen tried to take his weapon. He stuck his gun in Summers' back, thinking he was an older, easier target.
“I said, ‘All I want to do is leave,'” Summers said. “He said, ‘You can't leave.' I said, ‘OK. What do you want to do?'”
Summers said the teen was controlling him, but then the 61-year-old man pulled out his own gun and shot the boy in the stomach. The teen picked up the gun that he dropped and limped out of the store.
The size, strength, and agility advantages were all on the side of the armed robbery suspect. He knew that Darius was armed. Darius' handgun and tactics more than evened the odds, allowing him to prevail and likely prevent untold future crimes.

Darius was the armed citizen in this report. Didn't catch the name of the thug he shot.

It’s such a shame his robbery went so wrong for him.
He probably bumped his head on a Confederate Statue and that’s what made him commit the crime in the first place. Oh, and Bigfoot egging him on.

I particularly like it that Darius gut shot the thug. Very painful, and likely to really screw him up the rest of his life. The thug won’t be trashing the buffett at Zeb’s BBQ Heaven any more.

The 61-yr-old shouldn’t have allowed that. A couple more shots and he wouldn’t have to always be looking over his shoulder for the 16-yr-old punk to get his revenge.
This incident points out the biggest drawback in open carry. Miscreants like Darius will simply shoot you in the back and take your weapon from your dead body.
The young thug knew Darius was armed (Darius was the victim) and *did not* shoot him immediately and take his weapon.
This example does not work for your hypothetical.

Most people in our society have an aversion to killing another person. It comes from Christian culture. Lots of non-Christian cultures do not have such an aversion.
Darius be de good guy dis time.
If you don't carry with one in the chamber you might as well just carry a two hole punch. This is an excellent example of a situation going south in a matter of seconds. And things can go south much faster than that.
But did the thug die? The story ends with the thug limping out of the store. I hope he’s dead.

Given that the potential victim has the advantage here, don’t let them leave with the evidence if possible. He might have attacked some other person outside just before (whatever) - dying, being driven off, etc.
Lock the door and assume a defensive position until the police arrive and stay in contact with them if you can.
At least, that’s what I would do.
