Is the name John McCain cursed?
Look at the CO and EO, newbs. When did they start letting people without significant command experience captain these ships.
What is this? affirmative action?
If a ship runs into another ship, then its bow, the front of the ship is damaged.
If a ship is damaged on the side, then it has been run into by the other ship.

10 missing after USS John McCain collides with merchant ship; search underway
335 post currently if anyone cares to scan thru them.
Anyone see a pattern here?
The US Navy has implemented Obama mandated standards of performance, our enemies will now laugh themselves to death and we win.
...
But we're dead.
You mean Sanchez and Sanchez?
Apparently the former Captain recommended his XO as Captain since the current Captain cam aboard as XO in 2015.
I wonder if the McCain has been a harmonious ship with a cooperative command?
The McCain was named NOT for the John McCain of today's news, the ship was named for his grandfather and father who were both Admirals with disinguised naval careers.
Wonder what they truly thought of their son and grandson.
I suppose they were proud.
I guess
from a report by Fox news;
“Initial reports indicated the warship sustained damage to its port side aft, the left rear of the ship.”
if yhis is true, the war ship was hit
The command of that ship does seem a bit out of the ordinary. And out of jobs now. But now we are out of a ship at least for a while.
the ship has the ability to either stop or go to full ahead in just a few secs and is so powerful that the ship can go full ahead to full stop in less than 2 ship lengths.
I don’t believe this ship could ever be in a collision to an observant crew.
Even during unrep, I have seen this maneuverability avoid being sideswiped using emergency break-away and dancing away.
One time we even did it with a carrier on our left and a oiler on our right. The oiler suddenly started pinch us in the middle and we broke away and powered out between the two ships.
The Captain decided to unrep with them separately after that because he didn’t trust the oiler.
Rules of navigation say that the bigger less maneuverable ship always has the right of way.
I remember when a supply ship lost 2 deck crew to a line snapping, the admiral flew in and took command till a new Captain could take command. It happened just a few days after they docked.
I think senior command made the admiral do it as punishment for allowing a captain to serve that would even be involved in a double fatality on deck.
Apparently there was more backstory on this but they kept it hush hush. But from what leaked, it had to do with the deck watch and inappropriate relationships between senior and junior enlisted.
So they can run over anyone they want to?
These kinds of incidents are never that straight forward.
And the rules don’t negate the facts.
Our Navy ships were run into.
Looks like it hit Engineering’s Berthing Compartment, Damage Control Maintenance but I can’t see what else might have been hit farther below the water line.
Maybe AUX 2? That is a real pain to dewater.
They can’t intentionally, but they have the right of way and if you get in their way it is your fault if they run you down.
Some factors that go into this are there navigation lights etc...
But generally, it is always your fault.
There are rumors that McCain suffered a loss of steering just before the collision, if so it may be an equipment malfunction at a critical time.
We have a lot of people here on Free Republic who were in the Navy and are very angry that sailors are injured, missing and dead.
Rightly so.
They are proud of their service and recall that they were disciplined to be alert while on duty on the bridge.
Rightly so.
They want to see that measures are taken to preclude this from happening again.
Rightly so.
Determining the “Proximate Cause” of this is going to take some time and a whole lot of investigation.
It could very well be that there was negligence involved on our ships.
That does not means that our sailors behavior was the “Proximate Cause” of this incident.
Have you ever seen a civil trial where percentages of blame are handed out?
That is what is going on here.
We will see what the percentages of blame are.
There are many redundancies for steering on these ships, they even have manual steering that they can relay from the bridge over coms.
It would cut down their maneuverability but they still would be better than a cargo ship. We have procedures for this, one is notifying everyone the area and setting your signal flags when you are in one of the most busy straights in the world.
Everyone knows that ship equipment failure is not an excuse. It is the Captain’s job to make sure his ship is seaworthy.
