If a ship runs into another ship, then its bow, the front of the ship is damaged.
If a ship is damaged on the side, then it has been run into by the other ship.
Rules of navigation say that the bigger less maneuverable ship always has the right of way.
Maybe the Navy should use this to track ships:

They can also use their radar and post men to look out the windows.
Geez they miss giant ships coming at them slowly and they are suppose to be able to avoid missiles coming at them?
They must be playing video games or listening to their music on the bridge.
