Duke University removed a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee from the entrance of a chapel on the Durham, North Carolina, campus, officials said on Saturday, days after it was vandalized.
The decision to take down the statue followed discussions among students, faculty, staff and alumni about maintaining safety on campus, university President Vincent E. Price said in a statement.
"I took this course of action to protect Duke Chapel, to ensure the vital safety of students and community members who worship there, and above all to express the deep and abiding values of our university," Price said.
The prestigious university will preserve the statue of Lee, who led Confederate forces in the American Civil War of 1861-1865, and use it as an educational tool so that students can study "Duke's complex past," Price added.
The Confederacy, comprised of 11 Southern states, broke from the Union largely to preserve the institution of slavery.
Symbols of the Confederacy have come into focus since last weekend, when white nationalists, angered at the planned removal of a statue of Lee from a park in Charlottesville, Virginia, engaged in violent protests where a counter-protester was killed.

It is known that Duke owned one enslaved person, named Caroline, whom he purchased for $601, and had hired out the labor of an enslaved person from his neighbors to work on his farm.
He enlisted in the Confederate navy, and served in Charleston, SC, and Richmond, VA, until his capture by Union forces in April 1865.
In appreciation, Trinity College changed their name to Duke University, in honor of Washington Duke, who had been a supporter of Trinity for decades. Today, a statue of Washington Duke sits on the university's East Campus, watching over the school he had supported for so many years.
If people vandalized a contentious monument to homofascism would liberals likewise remove it?
Say the Stonewall plaque?
“I took this course of action to protect Duke Chapel, to ensure the vital safety of students and community members who worship there, and above all to express the deep and abiding values of our university,” Price said.
Well, Dean Price I reckon we are seeing your schools values.
I am very happy to take part in this unveiling of the statue of General Robert E. Lee, FDR said at the dedication ceremony, according to the American Presidency Project at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

I posted some racist Lincoln quotes on here this past week calling for the same thing. Tear down those Lincoln statues!
Then I posted advice MLK gave a young boy questioning his sexuality telling him to get psychiatric help and his condition wasn’t “innate.” Homophobic! Blow up his statue as well.
Congress needs a law that ANY statue taken down must be replaced with a White House-approved statue of President Trump.
Another statue of a Democrat removed.
And always the media fails to report the political party that Lee belonged to - when it’s the Democrat Party.
Duke university should be protested!
Duke was a tobacco mogul and fought on the Confederate side.
Tobacco killed more people than all wars combine and all wars to be.
Duke university must be shut down. !
(*sarcasm off )
Appeasement will get Duke more demands, and there will always be more demands.
DIDN’T MARIN LUTHER KING LIKE TO BEAT THE #### OUT OF PROSTITUTES?
Time for street sign removal?

I am very happy to take part in this unveiling of the statue of
General Robert E. Lee.All over the United States we recognize him as a
great leader of men, as a great general. But, also, all over the
United States I believe that we recognize him as something much more
important than that. We recognize Robert E. Lee as one of our greatest
American Christians and one of our greatest American gentlemen.

B/W 1962 with Jack Kelly, Jeanne Cooper, Peter Brown, Robert Conrad and Andrew Duggan. Jerry Donovan is a small town American who takes his civil liberties for granted. One night, Jerry dreams that his community has been taken over by communists. His friends and family quickly turn against him leading to his arrest and conviction for “subversive” activities. Upon awakening, Jerry has a new appreciation for America’s freedoms and resolves to shoulder a greater portion of his civic responsibilities.
Skip ahead to 9:15 when he wakes up to the “new reality”. Children indoctrinated by the State against the parents’ values and the family unit. Churches turned into secular museums...
FDR appointed a Klansman Democrat to the Supreme Court. That “justice” ruled in favor of FDR’s Japanese interment camps for families of Japanese heritage and against Catholic school students in a busing decision.
FDR was asked about the Klansman’s past when it came to light but he wasn’t fazed by the questions.
Don’t question The Party.
Well, Duke is the place that wanted to convict three of its lacrosse players for a crime that never happened, to appease the mob.
Removing a statue of Lee is a smaller example of the same kind of surrendering to a mob.
Pigeons everywhere are having nervous breakdowns
Thanks. Not an actual Twilight Zone, of course, but certainly a must see. Appreciate the posting!
The statue wasn’t contentious until some crybaby decided to make an issue of it.
There it stood for YEARS and nobody had a problem with it until now. When those who want to control everything decided to try to control everything.
Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten,
every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by
day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an
endless present in which the Party is always right.
