hen Richard Saukko galloped his chalk-white Arabian horse named Traveler around the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum almost 56 years ago, it was supposed to be a one-time stunt.
Instead, the brief performance before USC kicked off its season against Georgia Tech turned into one of college footballs iconic traditions. A succession of white horses named Traveler have followed Traveler IX debuts this fall trotting out of the tunnel as Conquest plays and the costumed Trojan warrior atop the horse waves a sword. But during a rally earlier this week to show solidarity in the aftermath of the violence in Charlottesville, Va., a USC campus group linked the name to Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee, whose favorite horse was Traveller.
At the rally, according to the student newspaper the Daily Trojan, Saphia Jackson, co-director of the USC Black Student Assembly, asked students not to be quiet, and reminded that white supremacy hits close to home and referenced the name of the Trojans mascot.
The Black Student Assembly did not respond to requests for comment, but questions about the names provenance have increased on social media in the midst of the national discussion on race.

Aren’t Trojans birth control devices? So let’s ban rubbers, too.
Aren’t VWs Nazi cars??......
Uncle Bob spelled “Traveller” with two Ls. No similarity whatsoever.
Forrest had 29 horses shot from under him during The Late Unpleasantness. By the time they manage to ban all the horse names he must have used, all we’ll be left with is “Spot” and “Whinny.” And maybe “Erasmus.”
Ole Miss surrendered years ago
But Robert E. Lee’s horse “Traveler” was named after a certain breed of horse that came from a horse called “Traveler”. So Traveler is not merely Robert E. Lee’s horse’s name but the name of a certain breed of horse.
I have no idea how factual their piece literally is. i think the timing of the article is curious, all things considered.
“It should be painted blue and named Larry.”

You mean La’Qwandeesha
I'd be more concerned about the school name. Who the heck would want to be known as a trojan?
Just rename the horse Robert C. Byrd and the clamor will cease.
Oh, I don't know...removing the Joan of Arc statue in New Orleans?
Looks like at least 10 US congressmen are named Robert. They must face scrutiny for having a similar name to Robert E Lee. Can we call them Bob?
Sheila Jackson Lee and Mike Lee must go today - unacceptable and there’s no solution other than removing these symbols of racism from our government.
When are they going to dig up the original Traveller who is buried near by to Lee?
VMI... where a stuffed horse named Traveler (Lee’s horse) resides on display.
I saw it many decades ago.
I also saw Cisco (on display) as well. Cisco was the “lone survivor” of the battle of the Little Bighorn.
“Naming a horse Traveler is like naming a dog Duke”
One the best dogs I ever owned was named Duke. Loyal, with a brave heart beating in his chest... MinPin... that dog was something else.
His name is Susan and wants his life choices respected.
I thought it was funny.
Just tell them “His name is Susan and he wants you to respect his life choices”.
“A good portion of our country has gone bonkers. I don’t think there is a return from this level of bonkers.”
That’s a fact.
Posted before I read all the replies. LOL.
I have known some great horses named Traveler. Used to be a common name, everyone wanted a horse that traveled good so it was a compliment to call a horse that.
MinPins are really cool. If I didn’t have more dogs than I need now I would like to have one.
I believe you assume correctly
