It's not unknown here in the U.S. - watched an episode of "Monsters Inside Me" recently about a little girl who got the Bubonic plague from flea bites in Arizona. She survived, but at one point her body temp was 107 degrees.
Another young man caught leprosy from armadillo blood that got in a cut - he nearly died but survived badly scarred.

They’ve known about this for years. I personally have read about the bacteria for plague being found on rodents in the Az desert as far back as 10 years ago.

Both bubonic plague and leprosy are treatable with antibiotics, but you have to know what you’re dealing with - very promptly, in the case of plague.

The World Health Organization provides free treatment for leprosy world-wide, but many in the kinds of places where leprosy is endemic don’t know about it.
