(CNN)More than 150 years after the Civil War ended, the Confederacy is memorialized with statues, monuments and historical markers across the United States.
Some say they mark history and honor heritage. Others argue they are racist symbols of America's dark legacy of slavery. A nationwide debate surrounding this issue has been underway since Dylann Roof killed nine African-Americans in a Charleston, South Carolina, church in 2015 in an effort to "start a race war." And it flared up again after white nationalists marched last weekend to protest the removal of a Robert E. Lee statue in Charlottesville, Virginia, where a counterprotester was killed amid violent clashes between demonstrators.

“The only possible purpose of rubbing that defeat in the losing sides face 152 years later....”
The losing side of the Civil War no longer exists as there is not a single person alive that took sides in the Civil War.
And all of the Soldiers from the losing side were granted American Veteran status in 1958 ...
"U.S. Public Law 85-425: Sec. 410 Approved 23 May 1958
(US Statutes at Large Volume 72, Part 1, Page 133-134)
The Administrator shall pay to each person who served in the military or naval forces of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War a monthly pension in the same amounts and subject to the same conditions as would have been applicable to such person under the laws in effect on December 31, 1957, if his service in such forces had been service in the military or naval forces of the United States."
Additionally, this from President McKinley, himself a Union Army veteran, in 1898 ...
every soldiers grave made during our unfortunate civil war [sic] is a tribute to American valor
And the time has now come
when in the spirit of fraternity we should share in the care of the graves of the Confederate soldiers
The cordial feeling now happily existing between the North and South prompts this gracious act and if it needed further justification it is found in the gallant loyalty to the Union and the flag so conspicuously shown in the year just passed by the sons and grandsons of those heroic dead.
YUP!! Just like those here at FR who post articles just to stir $#!t up.
IF you read I asked “Does”, Jason Kessler work for CNN.
"The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) reports that Jason Kessler, the organizer of last Saturdays white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, is rumored to be a former Occupy Wall Street activist and supporter of Barack Obama."
Well played, FRiend.
“The losing side of the Civil War no longer exists as there is not a single person alive that took sides in the Civil War.”
Oh my, I didn’t realize that. Obviously my point is moot. /s
NOT because there are millions of Confederate sympathizers in America, but because there are millions of Americans who now more clearly see the threat from the Left ... to utterly destroy the foundations of the United States of America.
There is a danger in indulging in triumphalism too soon.
I sure would like to know who ordered all those ‘new’ Nazi flags planted throughout Kessler’s protest. I think it is strange, and remarkable that the mass media, has neglected to inform US about who Jason Kessler really is... A new comer, since last November to being a ‘white supremacists’. I am not going to pollute my computer, to search where one buys a Nazi flag.
Somebody attempted to necklace around Trump and his supporters as being, KKK, Nazis, and white supremacist. It sure did not come from Trump or any of his supporters. This bunch did not, nor do they give a damn if ‘history’ is destroyed. Have any of this bunch sought to tear down the Stalin monument?
When the AP tracked down the driver's mom, she thought her son was going to a ‘Trump’ rally... Wonder where she got that idea?
Well said, and an excellent Tweet by Trump too.
My intuition is that the MSM (incl Fox) are all wrong again. Trump's defense of free speech and of our nation's historic symbols even those that remind us of terrible events of our past will not diminish support for Trump from the public. It will only solidify it. I know for sure that that is its effect on me.
The dead were Americans.
Jubilation T Cornpone
I checked the State lists and noticed Kentucky didn’t mention the Jefferson Davis Monument. It has been vandalized recently, but I would think a 351 foot tall obelisk would make a great warm up for the communist to tear down the similar Washington monument.
Exactly right.
An event was generated. A new slogan suddenly appeared everywhere: white nationalist. The previous phrase was white supremacist. The flood of the new slogan is the tell that we are being propagandized. Now nationalist has been spuriously linked to racism. Nationalism is the target, and by extension Trump. Witness the attacks on Trump. Despite repeatedly condemning “hate bigotry and violence” Trump is attacked.
That’s excellent.
“The fact that Kessler did not get white supremacy until last November, after Trump won, says volumes about his intent.”
How do we know that?
Since when is CNN a reliable source? Given how much was made public knowledge about the car driver in warp-speed, it is more than a bit strange that CNN has done no such thing about this Jason Kessler.
I stole the last frame from another FReeper and the other images from duckduckgo searech, so can’t take full credit.
