Iowa Democrats pulled off an impressive and important victory in a Southeast Iowa special election this evening, boosting the partys hopes that 2018 could be a bounce-back year. Democratic veterinarian Phil Miller of Fairfield comfortably defeated Republican farmer Travis Harris of Davis County, 4,021 to 3,324 (about 55% to 45%), thanks largely to a massive victory in his hometown of Jefferson County. That means Democrats will hold on to a key rural swing district that Donald Trump won in November by 22 points....
Miller was about as ideal of a candidate as you could hope for in this race: a well-known community leader who locals trusted from his work as a large and small-animal veterinarian. But Republicans ran an intensely negative campaign on TV, attacking Miller for his vote on the Fairfield School Board to keep a policy on transgender bathrooms in place....

A town of 7300 voters. Look out DC. Here comes the House majority re-take.

>> “It was hilarious when I revealed to her that I was a doctor...” <<
You don’t own that knowledge!
It belongs to the peeples! :o)

Including a few thousand Maharishi followers.
Oh they finally got a local win
This nails the fallacy of health care being a right. If it requires someone else to do it for you, it means someone has to be forced to do it. That makes them a slave.
“Rights” are things you have the right to do, not things you have a right to receive from the efforts of others.
Eliminate the obvious crime syndicate party at the ballot box. Hold the other one accountable. Problem solved. Going backward duopoly ALERT! MAGA.
“...key rural swing district.”
Key? Iowa house is 59-R to 40-D.
I recently had to attend an event with Mrs WBill, populated by all academic types, and their various hangers-on.
The first question from every single person that I met was, "So, What do you do for a living?". My job is not who I am, so I just gave a noncommittal answer. They wouldn't have cared anyway, they were more interested in telling me that they were the "Senior Director for the Advanced Program to the blah blah blah" ...whatever. Like I'll be impressed or something. My job is to make a company go, not just attend meetings and shuffle papers around.
Mentioned it to my dad. He said, "It's because they want to pigeonhole you into a specific profile." Makes as much sense as anything.
My grandfather used to hang around with some important people in his retirement community, heck, his usual golf foursome had a former 3-star, and the former CEO of a Fortune 5 company. No one there *ever* asked me what I did. It was enough that I was "WBill Sr. 's grandson", that's what was important.
I really liked all those guys. Great men, all of them, with good stories to tell.
Iowa House for District 82 ...... ‘Rat replacing a ‘Rat. I guess the Dems have to have SOME small crumb to be happy about.
Nothing to do with Federal reps.
I think that's right.
I think it does show that you can’t expect transgender politics to carry the day. No one cares about that.
“Democrats success in District 82 wont do much to change the balance of power in the Iowa House: Republicans will maintain their 59-41 advantage there.”
Looks like the Iowa Lower House.
LOL! They hold on to a seat and it’s a huge victory. Just like not taking a seat they poured lots of money into was also a victory.
It was an election for a state seat in the Iowa House of Representatives. Thus, the reason the national media hasn’t been providing election coverage of it.
Perhaps it just proves that the DJT coat tails don't last nine months. Local parties cannot rest on their laurels, no matter how good they were.
Oh noes! Democrats will win in a tidal wave election in 2018!
It also has history of voting Democrat. realignment starts from the top at the Presidential race and works its way down.Plus some people have noticed that veterinarians are among the most respected people and seem to be able to begin with an advantage that someone else like a lawyer would have.
Or a better candidate. This was a Dem-held seat. You can't extrapolate from one election any particular trend. Each election stands on its own with its own variables and differences. It is not a referendum on Trump. It is a local election with no national implications.
Love how the media spins this.
OK, a Dem held onto a Dem seat..and it is news?? Now, why was it a special election? Was the Dem more conservative than the Republican? Was the Dem an office holder before, was the Republican?
