Sen. John McCain cautioned Tuesday that President Donald Trump should not threaten North Korea if he was not prepared to act.
"I take exception to the president's comments, because you got to be sure you can do what you say you're going to do," the Arizona Republican told "The Mac & Gaydos Show" on KTAR-FM in Phoenix.
President Trump told reporters in New Jersey that further threats from Pyongyang would be "met with fire and fury like the world has never seen."
"North Korea best not make any more threats to the United States," Trump said. "They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen.
"He has been very threatening beyond a normal statement," the president said.
"And, as I said, they will be met with fire, fury, and, frankly, power the likes of which the world has never seen before."
McCain, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said Trump was best to follow the adage of former President Teddy Roosevelt: "Speak softly and carry a big stick."
"The great leaders I've seen don't threaten unless they're ready to act," the senator said, "and I'm not sure President Trump is ready to act.
"It's not terrible in what he said," McCain continued. "It's the classic Trump in that he overstates things."
However, McCain said he did not believe North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un was ready for actual war.
"I think the rotund ruler in Pyongyang is crazy, but he's not ready to go to the brink," he said.
Still, Un should be taken seriously in light of reports North Korea has developed mini nuclear warheads that could be placed within intercontinental ballistic missiles.

If JOhn would hurry he could get some free radiation therapy !!
Was referring to the recent spate of news regarding more finds of unmasking. I worded it wrong, sorry. Today’s news dump favored the President on a number of fronts and of course, McCain has to ring up BS about NKorea.
NKorea is a diversion from swamp draining.
While I did not read the article I’m wondering if he will ever just shut up.
Yes...I put McCain, Clinton(s), and Obama in same basket...and I’m not one to hate people
No McCain fan here but I don’t see his statement as very inflammatory. Pretty rational actually. And that is becoming rarer lately.
Savor the rich irony of John McCain giving lectures on self-control ...
Did the President set down a Red Line today with is fire and fury comments?
Did the Norks cross that Red Line this evening with the threat on Guam?
Johnny smells a war before he croaks.
The leadership of the Republican party needs to disavow McCain immediately. He is attempting to undermine our president in a time of war.
“I dont hate many people, but I do hate that man. Thats all I can say on this forum.”
I am there with you, but I will add that I don’t normally wish that someone die because of their behavior, but in the case of McCain, I make an exception. But my “wish” is immaterial, because with his cancer, he will die, and it won’t be a protracted period before he’s gone.
How in HELL does this traitor McCain keep getting reelected? People are very stupid.
Yes and one of his felliw travelers is Lt. Col. Ralph Peters.
President Trump knows how to handle insane leaders with delusions of grandeur... And crazy dictators, too.
McCain is leading the fight to repeal Obamacare. At least his campaign ads said so.
Fellow .... going blind from looking at computer screens...
