Country legend Glen Campbell, whose crossover hits Gentle on My Mind, By the Time I Get to Phoenix and Rhinestone Cowboy forged a lasting bridge between country and pop music, died Tuesday. He was 81.
In 2011, Campbell announced he had been diagnosed with Alzheimers disease and mounted a well-publicized farewell tour. His official Twitter posted the news.

Doesn’t seem so long ago I was a little kid, it was summer time and Casey Kasem was playing “Southern Nights” on his countdown show. RIP Mr. Campbell.

IIRC John Harford wrote Gentle on My Mind. He changed his name to Hartford because that’s how everyone pronounced his last name.

Hartford worked on The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour, where he met one of the comedy writers for the show, who just happened to be a pretty good banjo player, by the name of Steve Martin.

I am a jazz musician...yet Glen Campbell had as much or maybe more influence on me as a young musician than Coltrane, Miles, or Maynard Ferguson.
His early works, many written by Jim Webb, profoundly impacted my life and my musical direction.
RIP dear sir....prayers to his family.

Truly that was his greatest song. All my FB friends posted that one, even the super big lib who loves Frank Zappa. Which surprised me and made me happy.
RIP Glen Campbell, not lost but gone before.

RIP.
Dad had it seven years before he passed and now Mom has had it almost 7 years. It’s not a good way to go.

He is self-taught on the guitar.
When he was one of the Beach Boys, he played bass.
He had perfect pitch in his voice.
He could listen to an unfamiliar song once, then play it perfectly right after. A remarkable talent.
His guitar solo in Gentle on My Mind, played with Willie Nelson's band in concert, is just remarkable.
