Trump China speech postponed as president expected to order trade probe

A speech on China’s trade practices that President Donald Trump was slated to give Friday has been postponed.

Trump was expected to order an investigation into trade with China. He is being encouraged by some Democrats to get tough with Beijing, making for rare bipartisan agreement with the Republican commander-in-chief.

The administration has been considering invoking a little-used provision of U.S. trade law to investigate whether China’s intellectual-property policies constitute “unfair trade practices,” The Wall Street Journal reported earlier this week. The move could pave the way for the U.S. to impose sanctions, which China would almost certainly challenge at the World Trade Organization.

Late Thursday, CNBC reported the event was postponed, citing sources close to the event. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Axios reported Trump will direct the probe due to complaints he has heard from Silicon Valley executives that Chinese theft of intellectual property is one of their biggest challenges. U.S. companies are required to share technology with Chinese firms to enter the Chinese market.

Sen. Sherrod Brown, an Ohio Democrat, said in a statement on Wednesday that he was hopeful the expected probe was “a sign the administration will continue to take action against other Chinese violations — including China’s steel overcapacity.”

On Wednesday, Senate Democrats unveiled their latest trade-policy proposals, which include what they call an independent trade prosecutor to combat trade cheating. They said the United States Trade Representative’s general counsel hasn’t done enough to stop cheating and singled out China as a pervasive example.

It is a little early to tell if it is really delayed. If there is a move to obstruct Trump’s trade policy, the prime suspect is more likely to be GOPe than Dems.

Fake bipartisanship. They’re doing the same calling for investigation of leaks now. Definitely a change in tactics on their part.

Sherrod Brown is as leftist as they come. I would be very nervous. Trump talks to anyone though and doesn’t get ticked until they hit first.

I think people like him have a rather narrow focus such as steel industry in his home district. On the other hand, Dems in Iowa could be upset because China indicated that one of their targets for retaliation would be soybeans.

Sherrod Brown represents OH pretty well. He's out there undermining President Trump far less often than our other US Senator, Republican Rob Portman. Loss of manufacturing jobs is THE issue in OH. He's probably sincere about wanting to level the playing field and bring jobs back. I wouldn't discount the possibility that there could be a bipartisan law that protects US jobs and intellectual property.

IP enforcement was part of the Trans-Pacific Partnership. We’ll have to see if the President can get a better deal.

Starting to see the playing field more clearly. Rats are going to jump on the Trump bandwagon around the periphery while claiming Republicans are against Trump. As of now, the Republicans have absolutely nothing to run on for reelection. The rats on the other hand have a clean slate where they can pick and choose their openings.

This has something to do with the chinese getting onboard more sanctions for the North Koreans.

I’m sure the chinese calculations was that to stall the IP sanctions they needed to give a little on the Norks.

Maybe they will cut oil supply for a few days, which is woefully inadequate. The best course of action is to announce it, and threaten to add more unless China gets serious. Trump should play a real hard ball.
