The startling 2016 presidential election weakened the notion of tribal identity rather than a shared American identity. And it may have begun a return to the old idea of unhyphenated Americans.
Many working-class voters left the Democratic Party and voted for a billionaire reality-TV star in 2016 because he promised jobs and economic growth first, a new sense of united Americanism second, and an end to politically correct ethnic tribalism third.
In the 19th century, huge influxes of Irish and German immigrants warred for influence and power against the existing American coastal establishment that traced its ancestry to England. Despite their ethnic chauvinism, these immigrant activist groups eventually became indistinguishable from their hosts.
Then and now, the forces of assimilation, integration and intermarriage make it hard to retain an ethnic cachet beyond two generations -- at least without constant inflows of new and often poor fellow immigrants.
The strained effort to champion the victimized tribe can turn comical. In the 1960s, my family still tried to buy Swedish-made Volvo automobiles and Electrolux vacuum cleaners. But it proved hopeless to cling to a fading Swedish heritage.
For all the trendy talk of the salad bowl and the careerist rewards of hyping a multicultural ancestry, America still remains a melting pot of diverse races, ethnicities and agendas.
The alternative of adjudicating which particular group is more victimized and in greater need of government reparations is a hopeless task in a multiracial society -- one that inevitably results in internecine strife among identity-politics groups.

I find a degree of entertainment in the victimhood races.
Right now, it seems that Moslems are winning, with Perverts in second. Illegal Aliens are a fourth, with Blacks and Women tied for fifth place.
Nothing would amuse me more than to see actual fighting (bodies hit the floor type fighting) breaking out among these groups, though.

It may be a little optimistic to hope that identity politics has reached a sort of end state with the ridiculous structure of competing demands teetering like a rickety junk shed, but teetering it is. Who knew when Title IX was enacted to foster women's sports that it would be subverted to the needs of men with confused sexual identities? Or that the "400 years of oppression" mantra that certain black activists have felt to be an unanswerable trump card could be reinterpreted to the use of homosexuals, whose putative oppression dates even further back? Or that whatever dignity American politics possesses would be degraded to the level of beggars in a Samaritan street vying to show passersby their sores?
That has led to the odd conviction on the part of Democrat strategists that the working class doesn't need jobs so much as pity that helped cost Hillary the election. Some people don't want to be victims. Some people want to achieve instead. And they're the ones who do if the government just stays the hell out of the way.
It is interesting that at least the Hispanic activists have figured out the degree to which the insistence on a Race (that is not, actually, a race) has diminished their appeal. That rebranding may be the first pebble of a landslide, but at the moment it's looking pretty minimal.
So is this "Better Deal", which unfortunately for the Dems doesn't actually get government out of the way at all, it merely promises to throw the gold coins out to a bigger crowd of beggars once more. I suspect they're missing the point. Again.

"Our number one and top priority is to protect and defend our community. It is not to assimilate and to please any other people in authority. Our obligation is to our young people, is to our women, to make sure our women are protected in our community, and our top priority, even higher than all those priorities, is to please Allah and only Allah."
Given that women are a majority in the population and on campus, I don’t see how they get any ‘victimhood’ status at all.
