WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump has become increasingly frustrated with his advisers tasked with crafting a new U.S. strategy in Afghanistan and recently suggested firing the war's top military commander during a tense meeting at the White House, according to senior administration officials.
During the July 19 meeting, Trump repeatedly suggested that Defense Secretary James Mattis and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joseph Dunford replace Gen. John Nicholson, the commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, because he is not winning the war, the officials said. Trump has not met Nicholson, and the Pentagon has been considering extending his time in Afghanistan.
Over nearly two hours in the situation room, Trump complained about NATO allies, inquired about the United States getting a piece of Afghan’s mineral wealth and repeatedly said the top U.S. general there should be fired.

Why are we still there? Why are we funding them? What’s shocking and awing is the entire ME hasn’t been turned into a parking lot.
To win it, we would have to give Pakistan back to India and outlaw Muslims. Otherwise, we should just come on home and let it rot.

Exactly. There couldn't have been too many people in this meeting & most of them generals. So it shouldn't be too hard to figure out the leaker.

In 2001 we won the war in a matter of days.
But then bad policy followed. There was no follow-up to de-Talban the entire country or to occupy as was done in Japan or Germany.
Wasted 14 years.
Stop dicking around with the “Hearts and Minds” mentality might be a step in the right direction.
I think that had we not armed and trained the Mujahideen the Soviets could have won. The Soviets would have just killed half the population or more.
I seriously doubt anyone is suggesting a new stategy. New tactics, maybe. But if the goal is to prop up a national government, it's the same strategy that is doomed to failure.

It would seem that Afghanistan might be semi-winnable with new rules of engagement that allow the military to no longer worry about collateral damage. Even then it is hard to tell foe from worser foe.
I would like to say that Afghanistan is not worth spit. I don’t give a darn about those bastards but I am furious that we are in their protecting Chinese owned mines!!! China hauls $1 trillion in minerals and we DO THE PROTECTION? how dumb can we get? If we “win” we get nothing. I say leave yesterday. I encourage President Trump to know when to fold em. Pick your battles but this aint one of them!!

I am no military expert, but it seems to me if you haven’t won a war after 16 years, you probably ought to give up and cut your losses.
All the real generals were forced out of the military for refusal to go along with the GLBT agenda.
