German Shepherds are living and dying in misery due to intensive breeding for cosmetic reasons, a major new report by the Royal Veterinary College has found.
A survey of data collected from 430 clinics across the UK reveals arthritis, cancer, aggression and sloping backs are afflicting the breed at higher rates than others due to aggressive selection.
Nearly one in two German Shepherds is being put down because they are unable to walk, experts said.

Actually, mathematically, there is a greater chance of less recessive traits from a mix of two (even inbred) different purebred breeds. So that will take a little sickness and skeletal malformation off the table.
Then you will want to look at the mother first, re epigenetics. She needs to not be too early or late in her breeding life, she needs to be roundly healthy re nutrition and exercise and joy (happy dog is huge). She needs to be fed true real nutrition, not typical dog food, which is unhealthy. Frozen natural, all vitals and minerals supplemented.
Last, look at the father, but this will not affect them in utero as much as the mother’s health will.
Sure, the litter won’t be too profitable for the breeder because of the unpredictable looks of the pups. But that “unpredictability” means healthier pups. And if you choose a good combo, they all look pretty darn cute.
Me and my two best German Shepherd friends at the river. Both of these are straight backs. The male is stronger than anything I have ever seen. The last pick captures a very rare Great Black Shark in her natural habitat, also significantly faster than Michael Phelps!
Do it anyway. These people are strictly money-driven jagoffs.
“shepherd-collie mix”
I’ve always wanted a Collerd.
GSDs?
Not that I know of.
I don’t breed my Dobes and they’re not local.
4 hour one way trip just to pick them up.
Ugh.
However, there is a woman in Harper’s Ferry WV who is planning a Dobe litter for the fall, and her dogs are epic.
I’d never breed because if the bitch had 10 puppies, I’d have 12 Dobermanns because I would never let them leave here, since no one in their right mind would ever agree to the insanely Draconian sales contract I would insist upon.
[”If, in the future, this dog is ever found to be living in less than spectacular conditions, your life will be forfeit” is the first line...and then I get really harsh]
:D
“And no recessive genes.”
You really need to research that.
It’s sadly quite far from true.
Adequan is fantastic for dog joint pain. It actually supplies building blocks and rebuilds the joint, rather than just masking the pain as the joint deteriorates.
About 100 for a vial with three to four injections. Have your vet show you how to do the injection, and give it once a week three times, and then do it every other week. It is all the difference for older dogs, and I bet it would help your girl.
It’s morons who breed for the almighty dollar and for even baser reasons that have ruined so many breeds, dobermans, rottweilers, boxers, mastiffs, pit bulls and now back to shepherds. They do this not for love of the animal or breed but for only the basest reasons, something that only man is capable of, and then of course we blame the breed and demand it’s extinction.
Got it.....
Haha, he’s very gentle actually...has picked up baby bunnies in his mouth and carries them around, he LOVES all types of babies and raised 4 human ones.

It does work for the majority of dogs although it did not work for my male German shepherd. I would still recommend using it.
Please keep up the good work. A beautiful animal being destroyed.
In that photo, the dog is “stacked” (in show pose), so the slope may not be so extreme when in a natural stance.
With that said, I want to slap some sense into GSD show breeders. AKC is pozzed as #$%@, UKC has more of an emphasis on healthy working dogs. In GSD’s I wouldn’t pay money for anything but Euro working lines these days.
Not just GS breeds, many others have genetic health issues. I’ve had 3 mini poodles CKC registered, all 3 developed cataracts frequent ear infections and cancer, all just lived about 10 yrs, and I take great care of my Fur Babies. While the mix breed Peekapoo lived to the ripe old age of 17, despite arthritis, deaf, and cataracts, lost him to a Stroke.
To much inbreeding for traits. I had all mine sterilized.
wont watch dog shows because of the idiots destroying dog breeds
“Breeding doesnt pay any attention to actual genetics. Clearly many purebreds desperately need some new genes. Time for these dog show kingdoms to join science and shape up. Each breed should start mixing breeds in a nice, controlled way, to get their genetic lines stronger. Why be proud to have weak, unhealthy genetics and shorter life?”
I don’t understand this statement, are you saying that anyone who breeds dogs doesn’t pay attention to genetics?
They ran that way around the ring
Kinda makes ya wonder how this...
