Homeland Security triggered a waiver Tuesday allowing the department to bypass environmental and other land protection laws in order to begin building and testing President Trumps new border wall.
The waivers apply to San Diego, where officials already plan to upgrade miles of existing fence, but where theyll also stage a competition this summer to build and test prototypes for Mr. Trumps wall.
Its the first in whats likely to be a series of waivers that will be needed as wall construction ramps up.
Officials insisted they will still try to be mindful of local impacts as they work on the wall.
While the waiver eliminates DHSs obligation to comply with various laws with respect to covered projects, the department remains committed to environmental stewardship with respect to these projects, the department said in a statement.

When people talk about the “Trump Wall” they sure often exhibit a lot of geographical ignorance. For most of Texas what is needed is NOT a border wall but a network of walls, fences, riverside roads, canine patrols, security cameras, drones, and entrance gates on the American side of the Rio Grande river.
And what will especially work is for us to totally eliminate all the sanctuaries & benefits for illegals with strict law enforcement procedures. For starts, it should never be catch->release but catch->hold->deport-or-hearing where the person crossing is given a choice to immediately go back or have a hearing. And if they have a hearing & lose then they should have to pay a fine to cover the process costs before they can apply for any entrance.
DemocRATS will Find a LieBeral Judge and go STOP it!
No sarcasm. Just appreciated your reply.
Whatever, just stop this taco invasion.
OMG THEY ARE GOING TO KILL A SAND SQUIRREL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WINNING!.. Lawsuits or leftist Federal judge action in 3-2-1..
More winning. My worry is we start seeing liberal “sit ins” at the border wall to prevent it from being built.
The actual facts are that the GOP Congress has passed most of what he wanted. The few Republicans that are stabbing us in the back are not representative of the party.
McCain? Collins? Murkowski? Give me a break.
While funding has been introduced in the House budget bill, Trump’s rhetoric alone has produced a tremendous drop in the invaders and the gang-bangers are being deported in record numbers.
With an administration that actually enforces the law is a “fence” even necessary? The Free Ride is ovah.
You can accurately judge his success by the degree and volume of the democratmedia. He is doing great.
Actually that is exactly what the Border Patrol has been asking for. Believe me the environmental/open borders lawyers can and have sought to use regulation to stop construction of all border protection infrastructure including barriers, roads and technology.
This takes their bag of legal tricks and puts it in the trash. That also means they can use this issue to raise funds which is what most of this is really about.
Good to see a rational post.
Just because something has not been reported by the media; that does not mean it is not happening...or hasn’t already happened.
Ping!
Then TWO things need to change. Just ONE conservative running in the primaries. Not 14.
And no more open primaries where dems can #### things up, as well as independents.
I wouldn't be surprised. Wanna bet there would be new Minutemen types down there for a counter-protest? I can see the fights now. Besides, the Feds tend to enforce their laws (right or wrong) more than local jurisdictions. I see the snowflake anarchists getting hauled away in droves. This is no longer Obambi's border.
I've been telling people for years that a gigantic solid Israeli type wall is not needed along the entire border. The double fence with road in-between, plus flood lights, did wonders for San Diego. Why they are starting with San Diego is questionable. Having driven the I-8 past that double fence barrier, I was stopped by 2 different BP check points in the middle of nowhere. Eastern Cali also consists of vast sand dunes until you get to Yuma, AZ., and that is pretty much covered by BP.
One more time for those who don't know Cali's border topography or have a map of the southwestern Arizona wasteland: It would take an army sized logistics efforts to cross that huge expanse. That's why southeastern Arizona became such a big problem, with the easy access to staging areas and towns to meld into.
Of course Texas is a bigger problem because of all the border towns. I agree with your recommendations. Depending on the topography and proximity to major highways and towns, all of your suggestions would be appropriate.
I'm also sick of hearing it called, "Trump's Wall". Congress passed the still valid law during W's term. Obambi and his socialist ilk stopped the pending funding.
Sure hope so, but would not like to see anyone hurt....on our side.
I had the same thought...
