The U.K. is set to ban all petrol and diesel cars and vans from 2040. Ministers will unveil a fund of £225 million ($332 million) to help councils take measures to deal with pollution from diesel vehicles.
"What we're saying to local authorities is come up with an imaginative solution to these proposals," said Environment Secretary Michael Gove.
The clean air strategy favoring electric cars would be published later by the government before a High Court deadline. After a legal battle the government was ordered to come up with new plans to curb the level of nitrogen dioxide pollutants, BBC reported.
The judges had agreed with campaigners that the last plan made by the government was not sufficient according to pollution limits of the European Union. The expected move to ban petrol and diesel vans and cars follows similar plans announced in France this month and amid increasing signs that the shift to electric vehicles is accelerating, reports said.
To implement the plans, lot of local measures like alteration of buses, speed breakers and reprogramming of traffic signals would have to be taken by authorities. While there were demands to ban the vehicles before 2025, however the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders were of the opinion that it would not be possible to outrightly ban these vehicles as it would hurt the industry.

From one boondoggle to another.
By 2040, the UK’s main source of transportation will be by camel.
Saw this story on BBC they talked about charging stations but no one said a word about where the Electricity would come from
“This is good. I’ve been to the UK and seen for myself their amazing electrical outlets that produce electricity right from the wall! “
Great. You’ll have to take an electrical engineer with you every time you go out in your Rolls golf cart.
2040! Show ban. Completely meaningless, that means there will be at least 3 Prime Ministers with opportunities to extend. We play the same game here, CAFE includes a major fleet fuel efficiency bump, except the deadline for that bump is always in the next President’s and guess what happens when the next President gets sworn in.
From the same people who are willfully creating a reverse Dunkirk out of the whole bloody UK.
Unicorn farts!
Great news.
The more the Euroweenies cripple themselves with this kind of nonsense, the longer the oil lasts and the cheaper it becomes for us.
“This is good. I’ve been to the UK and seen for myself their amazing electrical outlets that produce electricity right from the wall!”
You made me laugh. Thanks!

This will work out swimmingly for Volvo.
Didn’t they announce they will only be building electric cars? IIRC after 2020.
LOL, just what I was thinking. By 2040 diesel engines are going to be the very least of their problems.
Yeah. Snow plows. Construction and farm vehicles. Generators to use during power failures. Airplanes. Space ships. Motorcycles. Police and emergency vehicles.
Gonna ban them? If not, the other ban will make petroleum fuel so expensive as to make them obselete, and that is the intention.
LOL! They’re going to wind up with horse and buggies.
So when do they start the widespread large scale construction of nuke plants?
They better start building some more power plants and they will need to re-wire most of the houses and parking spots. Buy copper mines because they are going to need lots of it.
If they think that will keep muslims from running down Brits...
It is the burning of coal that produces the electricity. The electricity and the battery are just ways of delivering and storing the energy produced by the burning of the coal.
