Cantor comes clean, admits he didn’t believe his own ACA rhetoric

For several years, in his capacity as House Majority Leader, Eric Cantor helped lead the charge on repealing “Obamacare.” Put Republicans in charge, the Virginian told voters, and they’d dismantle the Affordable Care Act.

[SNIP]

The former GOP leader in the House talked to the Washingtonian’s Elaina Plott and conceded that his Republican Party is in a tough spot – parts of the conservative base expect the party to repeal the ACA, because that’s what they were promised – in part because of promises he and his colleagues made that they never intended to keep.

Asked if he feels partly responsible for their current predicament, Cantor is unequivocal. “Oh,” he says, “100 percent.”

He goes further: “To give the impression that if Republicans were in control of the House and Senate, that we could do that when Obama was still in office….” His voice trails off and he shakes his head. “I never believed it.”

He says he wasn’t the only one aware of the charade: “We sort of all got what was going on, that there was this disconnect in terms of communication, because no one wanted to take the time out in the general public to even think about ‘Wait a minute – that can’t happen.’ ” But, he adds, “if you’ve got that anger working for you, you’re gonna let it be.”

In context, when Cantor says he and his party felt the need to “let it be,” he means that Republicans fed a bunch of nonsense to their own voters, then exploited their anger for electoral gain with no intention of following through.

Cantor and his colleagues, in other words, played their base for fools – because they thought it’d help them win some elections, which it did.

One of the reasons why he’s former Congressman Cantor.

They are DEMOCRATS in sheeps clothing

Calling them "Democrats" mis-states the problem.

Both they and your so-called "Democrats" are engaged in a joint enterprise, they are on the same team, that team lacks a consensus name.

Abandon the rhetoric of "Republicans vs. Democrats". It's a fool's game.

It's American nationalists versus the entire planet, and huge majorities of elected officials from both parties are on the other side.

The thing is, this could cost them their majority if people sit out the next election in disgust.

*************************************************************

Oh PUHLEEZE!! Cantor got the boot for a reason. Now he conveniently is able to speak for the other 99 Senators over the past 7 yrs?

Anyone with half a working brain can see the purpose of this story is to equate the Republicans with the Liberals when they deliberately lied to the public and in fact called the voters “stupid” as an explanation of how they got the public (at least the Libs) to rally behind them to pass the horribly failed Obamacare.

Yes, fight to reform GOP, kick out RINOs and idiots like Cantor. But throw out the GOP entirely and you will be left with nothing but Democrats.
*************************************************************

Right, of course but there are so many here on FR who totally believe ALL they read and see from sources which they KNOW are lying almost every second of the day, know exactly what their agenda is but fall for the crap anyway.

These are the same gloom and doomers who never thought Trump had a prayer in the election and cited every phony poll to why they were right.

I am reminded of a story I read in Reader’s Digest many years ago.

It took place, IIRC, in a Philadelphia neighborhood in the 50’s and 60’s, when people shopped their neighborhood stores.

A man had what was then called a ‘Dry Goods’ store, selling clothing and sundry items, but usually not food or perishables.

He had done business in this neighborhood for a few years and had established a good rapport with the locals and had a solid customer base.

Then one day another man opened up practically an identical store right next to his.

Needless to say, the competition was fierce. They would both try to out sell the other by offering special deals or claiming that the other guy’s merchandise was sub standard and shoddily made. They would get into shouting matches out in front of the stores trying to drag each other’s customers into their store.

The locals knew that when they started yelling and screaming then bargains were to be had. They would come from many other neighborhoods just to watch the fights and save some money in the process.

Then, one day, one of the guys died. Don’t remember if it was a heart attack or whatever. His store was closed and the merchandise moved, then the other guy’s store closed as well and the era was over.

It was discovered that the two stores were actually connected in the rear, sharing the same store room.

The two men were brothers and had played this game in different places for decades with their customers never knowing the truth until they were gone.....................

The GOP is obviously not entirely leftist - but the leadership IS - it’s undeniable when Trump should be the defacto head of the GOP but McCain, McConnell and Ryan consistently attack him along with the Bushes and Romney. (Whom all supported Cantor)

I didn’t say I wouldn’t vote - I just won’t support the GOP with this leadership anymore. They’re still free (along with the DNC) to try to swing my vote.

Don’t follow. What does the direct election of senators by the people have to do with Obamacare?

If, in 2006, we would have began allowing the democrats to take every seat in Congress, EVERY republican would have been gone in 6 years. Nothing would be different because the Democrats always get their way no matter Who’s in the majority. Then in 2012 we could have started electing true conservatives. Just think, there would be no McCain, McConnell, Graham, Ryan, Hatch, et Al.

It may be too late now. But that’s what people thought on 2006. So I’ll never vote for another republican. Maybe I’ll live long enough to see the demise of the party. And remember, putting them in the majority got us squat. I’d rather have squat WITHOUT the Republicans than with them lying, admitting it and getting away with it.

They waved goodbye to Cantor and said “See ya’ tomorrow on K street, friend” and now you can get paid to pay us to screw over the dumbass voters.

“vote for their top opponent.”

That would mean voting dumblecrat. That is no option to “send a message”.

That must never happen. Crap like that got us into this mess in 2006 and 08. We got zerocare for it among a long list of freedom shattering laws rules and regs.

No you can’t keep sending them back but I don’t think there is a way in this current system to make it better...If their base revolts in the primary,,,yeah, maybe.

New York Slimes
WASHINGTON — The seven-year Republican quest to undo the Affordable Care Act appeared to reach a dead end on Tuesday in the Senate, leaving President Trump vowing to let President Barack Obama’s signature domestic achievement collapse.

Mr. Trump declared that his plan was now to “let Obamacare fail,” and suggested that Democrats would then seek out Republicans to work together on a bill to bury the Affordable Care Act.”

e-mail the WH! https://www.whitehouse.gov/contact

Urge President Trump to sign another EO ordering the IRS to ignore the tyrannical mandate by which those who work for a living but can’t afford Affordable Care are taxed to pay for it.
The Obama years of taking from some, the non-exempt, non-subsidised so that others can have more should end.

They took it too far. They should have done symbolic votes judiciously to show the other path the country could be going down, not abuse it to create a false narrative that they could profit off of.

Most politicians are “actors” who have no core beliefs, they say whatever they think will get them elected.

Duhhh! It has been obvious from the moment Trump became President - they never planned on keeping their promises and Cantor has admitted they are even worse than Democrats when it comes to telling lies to get votes.

They didn’t keep any one of their promises... this is not hard to figure out. Plus those who voted for the repeal of obamacare when they KNEW the president would not sign it, and now won’t vote for it because the President WILL sign it... that’s not hard to figure out either.

They never were going to repeal it.
Cantor is the one who sat there with the mountain of paperwork he called obamacare... quite a show!
