Sperm was frozen after Liu was killed in the line of duty

(Newser) – A New York City police officer has become a father more than two years after he was killed in the line of duty. Wenjian Liu was 32 years old and had been married for less than three months when he was shot and killed alongside fellow officer Rafael Ramos on Dec. 20, 2014, by a man who had made anti-police postings online.

Sperm from the fallen officer was retrieved and frozen the same night at the request of widow Sanny Liu. The NYPD says that through in-vitro fertilization, Liu gave birth to a healthy daughter named Angelina in New York on Tuesday, ABC 7 reports.

Friend Maria Dziergowski says Liu's parents were at the hospital within hours to meet their new granddaughter.

"The parents were very emotional, crying and holding the baby," she tells the New York Post. Liu says the night after her husband was shot dead in his patrol car, she dreamt that he was handing her a baby girl, reports NBC New York. After getting pregnant, she says, "I told my friend, 'It's going to be a baby girl.' My friend said, 'No, you haven't even checked the sonograms,' but I was right." She says she will tell her daughter that her father was a hero—and she is looking forward to introducing her to the NYPD, her "big blue family." (At the officer's funeral, police turned their backs on Mayor Bill de Blasio.)

They had been married for only a few months.

Should offsprings of sperm donors be entitled to the inheritence?

I don't see the problem if the man is the legitimate father who was married to the woman as in this situation.

Otherwise, I would say no. If you are going to be an anonymous sperm donor, then everything stops there.

I can see why she wanted to have their baby. When you love your spouse, it's what you want to do.

She was robbed of that by the savages who killed her husband.

Good for them, then.

I don’t blame them one bit.

If it were me I'd want that son/daughter to have a portion.

The ethics of this case are seriously disturbing.
