President Trump announced today on Twitter that transgender people will not be allowed to serve in the military.
"After consultation with my generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States government will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. military," the president wrote. "Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail."
The surprise announcement was praised by conservative and religious groups.
"This is a major victory for conservatives, for our military and it's a milestone from a standpoint of ending and reversing Obama-era social engineering policies that really crippled our nation's military," Family Research Council president Tony Perkins told The Todd Starnes Show.
Rep. Vicky Hartzler (R-MO) had proposed an amendment to a spending bill that would have banned the Pentagon from spending money on transition surgery or related hormone therapy.
"Our military is not advancing the desires of individuals. Our military is about collectively advancing the interests of America and securing our nation's future," Perkins told me.
The ACLU and the Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers were among those denouncing the president's decision.
There is little justification to oppose open Transgender service as well as full health care support for servicemen and veterans for full sexual reassignment, said Jason Torpy, president of the Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers. This order serves to harm military readiness and deeply insults already-serving transgender patriots in the military.
Rand Corporation estimates as many as 2,450 service members are transgender - just a fraction of the 1.3 million people serving in the military.
"It's not about the individual - it's about the military, " Perkins said. "President Obama used the military for the advancement of his radical social agenda. This president is saying no. The military is there for one purpose only - to keep America secure."
Has the military got or issued any kind of order on this, or it just a tweet?
Pretty good example of Trump doing what he thinks is right and damn the consequences. A lesser pub would have avoided any change in the status quo to prevent stirring the pot.
I believe this is leftist hype to call this a conservative victory; they’ve simply moved the goalposts. The “status quo” was in place for one year...
“It’s not about the individual - it’s about the military, “ Perkins said. “President Obama used the military for the advancement of his radical social agenda. This president is saying no. The military is there for one purpose only - to keep America secure.”

The reasons and ONLY reasons for the military is two fold.
Deter aggressors from invading or otherwise inflicting harm upon the citizens or infrastructure) of this nation.
Failing to deter, the mission becomes to kill people and break things to the extent that the enemy will to fight is completely broken.
kill people and break things.
No! It's a major victory for the military and the security and safety of the United States of America!
Well, yeah! The President is the Commander-in-Chief of the military! Apparently, everyone understands it as an order. Just check your newspaper this morning!
It’s a sad state of affairs when common sense and decency are applied and it’s called a “major victory”.
if you want to try a social experiment, try it where the unexpected result won't put us in danger. Experiment in California, no loss there if things screw up.
That ‘everybody’ that you seem to respect so much right now are saying that no transgenders are being discharged to leave the military, regardless of the tweet. That is because there is no order, just a tweet.
Trump has also took credit for the repeal of Obamacare a few times too starting after passage of the House bill.
Lets see it happen.
I wouldn’t call it a victory.
It just recovering a little sanity from hedonistic, perverted Left. We tried to get closer to realizing the purpose of our military as a bulwark against our foes, and not as some sort of playground.
However, to full realize this recovery, we need to purge the senior officers - any officer more worried about ‘diversity’ than performance or achievement needs to be given his walking papers.
Hyperbole. It is only a very minor victory.
A major victory would be getting the federal government to deny security clearances to gays and/or classifying homosexuality as a mental disorder.
But I will take it regardless.
....kill people and break things....
When you enter the military, it’s
The same haircuts
The same uniforms
No individual identity
No special treatment for anyone
You have the rights that are issued to you
That’s the only way the military can work
And you know that going in.

People on both sides turn too many things into a “major” battle/victory/loss. This impacts under 1% of the country and is a small battle in a major culture war.
Our military can deal with ISIS. I don’t think they’d fall apart with Obama’s transgender policy - it wouldn’t be beneficial, but the men and women in the military deal with far worse crap every day. I bet they’d have said - if they had to pick one - get rid of Obama’s rules of engagement on the battlefield than rules of bathrooms (I know it goes beyond bathrooms). It’s great that both are gone but this one is not “major”
Obamacare is a major battle. It affects 100% of the country and could literally be the program that pushes our deficit out of control (i.e. we have to print money to fund the military).
When liberals get unreasonably outraged or conservatives get unreasonably giddy over the small wins/losses, there’s no chance of fixing the major problems and both sides are going to dig in their heels on the next small battle.
Just check your newspaper this morning! /S
A victory for conservatives? *fooey*
The military is not the place for social/medical experimentation. It’s sole purpose is the nation’s defense. Why is this so hard to understand?
Not that I've heard. Yesterday Huckabee Sanders was directing questions to the Pentagon and the Pentagon was directing questions to the White House. I think the President caught everyone by surprise with this. They'll have to buckle down and turn his instructions into policy quickly.
And that is why we must support him
They say :”Special council closing in on Trump campaign on Russian collusion’.
