Participant in Cliven Bundy standoff sentenced to 68 years in prison
Los Angeles Times (via TriCity Herald) ^ | July 26, 2017 | DAVID MONTERO

The weight of a heavy sentence landed in the quiet federal courtroom Wednesday morning, leaving Gregory Burleson occasionally stroking his graying beard and his attorney pleading unsuccessfully for leniency.

The 53-year-old Burleson was the first to be sentenced for his role in the 2014 standoff between federal agents and supporters of Cliven Bundy near his Nevada ranch.

He got 68 years in prison.

U.S. District Court Judge Gloria Navarro did take into account his blindness and frailty – he sat in a wheelchair during the hearing – but she also reminded Burleson of his crimes, which included threatening a federal law enforcement officer, obstruction of justice and interstate travel in aid of extortion.

She said agents – who hunkered down in a wash while Bundy supporters trained guns on them, recorded them and shouted at them – were scarred from the experience and suffered mental trauma.

"That isn't something that heals over with a scab," Navarro said. "You can't put it in a cast or stitch it up."

The case has been watched closely as it marked another round between the federal government and those who believe public lands should be transferred to local control. Burleson's trial drew supporters from neighboring states throughout the proceedings, which ended in April, and a handful would gather outside the courthouse to monitor the developments and post updates to sympathizers on social media.

"Burleson's lawyer said on Wednesday that his client was manipulated into the standoff and was only seeking fame - despite Burleson's admission that he'd posted alcohol-fueled rants against the government. He said he never intended to harm or kill anyone during the standoff."

Well he has his moment of fame now.

So how long will the cop in the Twin Cities get?

Interesting narrative being spun with this case.

LaVoy Finicum was murdered by Government agents, and many more before him, but that wasn’t the hill to die on.

Poor LaVoy Finicum. If only he had done what the police ordered and followed their commands then he'd be alive today. And so forth and so on.

Seriously, this is a great opportunity for President Trump to issue either a commutation or pardon. It would be a win-win for him.

Since Sessions has spoken out in favor of the prosecution in this case then it would also be a chance to put another nail in the AGs coffin.

I’m not the one disagreeing with the Constitution, you are

He's not disagreeing with the Constitution, he's disagreeing with the website you posted. The Supreme Court has upheld the federal government property rights on any number of cases.

That’s awesome: The out-of-control Federal Government has upheld the Federal governments position in court...

He’s doing a fine job of speaking for himself BTW.

Hopefully or likely? Hopefully he is prosecuted for her death and serves time in prison. Likely they will say he feared for his life and no charges will be filed, but fired from the force. Same as the cop that shot Philando Castile.

Somehow I never expected to find so many groveling bootlickers on Free Republic.

What you posted is a lie. LaVoy Finicum was shot the first time without warning, by an unnamed federal agent who’s identity is protected.

If the government kills you, without having been convicted of a capital crime or being in the process of committing a violent felony, YOU AREN’T THE PROBLEM.

I remember the stories of people in the country killing so called “revenuers” on sight for trespassing. It seems this is going to inspire people to do the same now, they don’t need much excuse.

Who should I believe? You or the video? Decisions, decisions.

Your contempt for the Constitution is duly noted. But that still doesn't answer why I should accept the opinions on the website over the opinions of the court?

He’s doing a fine job of speaking for himself BTW.

I agree.

Actually his name W. Joseph Astarita.

Was not revealed until his hearing.

And of course, barely any mention of him in the MSM.

Yeah, buddy... You go ahead and believe that.

“Police forces do it all the time.”

AGAIN: Looks like we’ve found the problem.

For a multiple rapist, mass murder, etc - 68 years makes sense. For “threatening a federal law enforcement officer, obstruction of justice and interstate travel in aid of extortion”? YGBSM!

And if the weenies in the federal government are “scarred”, what about people who have seen COMBAT? I’ve been SHOT AT. Not threatened. Shot at. Didn’t scar me. Didn’t leave me damaged and needing revenge.

Has America gone mad?

"Your contempt for the Constitution is duly noted"

Your contempt for literacy is duly noted...

You continue to assert that the constitution says this, or that, but you've provided no evidence other than your humble deferral to the liberal courts.

If you have information that refutes what I've said, post it; If you have nothing more to add than snarky ignorance, crawl back into your hole.

Thank you. Now let's see if he's held accountable...

“Specifically defendant W. Joseph Astarita falsely stated he had not fired his weapon during the attempted arrest of Robert LaVoy Finicum, when he knew then and there that he had,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Pamala Holsinger wrote in the indictment."

"but who are you going to believe, the Government?"

Has America gone mad?

What do you think motivates a Spaniard female sitting in judgement of a WASP?

Empathy? Core belief in Individualism?

Or her own centuries long history of despotism in service to the wretched "nobility" of the decrepit Spanish Empire, upended by such creatures as the white Anglo-Saxon who stood before her?

There's a reason we Protestants revile the name of Torquemada, just another grotesquely unjust Spanish "judge".

He was one of the names we remembered when our Revolution was fought. "Nor Cruel and unusual punishments inflicted...".

"judge" Navarro is the daughter of Cuban "refugees" from the very paradise that she seeks to inflict on the rest of us. Her education came from universities that you and I paid for as Arizona taxpayers (ASU). They were NOT founded by Spanish Conquistadors like her family.

But she isn't grateful. Just vengeful. Getting back at the impudent Gringos who think they can stand up to her Imperial power.

So America isn't mad. Just the fraudulent foreigners posing as Americans, who forced their way in to get their hands into the pie.
