EXCERPT
He stressed the importance of the Senate, issuing what appeared to be a warning to President Donald Trump.
"We are not the president's subordinates. We are his equal," McCain said of the legislative branch.
McCain also spoke at length about the at-times acrimonious relations within the Senate and urged his colleagues to work across the aisle.
"Our deliberations can still be important and useful, but I think we can all agree that they haven't been overburdened by greatness lately," he said.
"Stop listening to the bombastic loudmouths on the radio and television and the internet. To hell with them!" he said in a line that was met by applause.
"What have we to lose by trying to work together to find those solutions?" he asked.

Is always gop that has to reach across the aisle. Bah humbug
The MO of McLame’s entire political career has been: 1) evoke sympathy; and, 2) trade on that sympathy.
I read he voted yes on the bill and then blasted it. So my question is why did he vote yes? Idiot.
I basically wanted to kill myself listening to the jackass drone on.
No, he’s right, while POTUS is more important than any one legislator (they can’t issue a veto), Congress is where all the action is supposed to happen, and POTUS is the executive of the laws passed by Congress. Which only makes it that much more disgraceful what a bunch of RINO’s and liberal-suckers they are, and how they’ve abdicated so much of their authority to the executive and to agency bureaucrats that are beyond voters’ reach — which is of course why those enemies of freedom do it in the first place.
Yeah - FU John - you’re no better than the citizens of the US either but you still think you have authority over us.
But somehow I’m sure that if you had won your disastrous and nonsensical campaign for president you’d be treating the senate as your subordinates and lording it over them like you do with everyone else every day.
Your lack of decorum and statesmanship here proves that.
But you where Obama’s bitches and that was OK
The President was very gracious to this malignant little troll this morning. Too bad the nasty old pos can’t repay in kind. Just retire already you moron.
Man, this is such rich territory for snarks and jokes. Alas, this one has a get out of jail free card for as long as he’s fighting deadly cancer.
Now, bear in mind I’m just speaking to the specific issue of the relationship of the executive to the legislature. As for this specific time to announce it, note that this traitorous aisle-reaching RINO azzhat is talking about it NOW, rather than when Ebola was in the White House.
I’ll second that!
“why did he vote yes?”
To bring the Defense bill to the floor. That’s what he pays his donors off with.
I have an uncle that is dying from this same cancer. He is 60 years old and a very strong man, but 11 days after his surgery he could not have done what McCain did today.
That is all I will say about his speech.
Yeah, John, stand up to the president like you did to Obama.
The Shadow President speaks.
Burn in hell you old coot!
I say that, because me being a conservative, he hates me, same as Barry Obama hates me.
Henry Clay and Daniel Webster would have beaten you with a walking stick for that statement. Senators themselves are probably not equal to the President since their power is divided, but the three branches themselves are (supposed) to be equal.
By your logic, the Senate should pass any bill the President wants. I assume you felt that way with Presidents Obama and Clinton as well.
so true, so true....
What were yinz when King Obama reigned in the White Hut there, Johnny Boy??
