A leading psychiatry group has told its members they should not feel bound by a longstanding rule against commenting publicly on the mental state of public figures even the president.
The statement, an email this month from the executive committee of the American Psychoanalytic Association to its 3,500 members, represents the first significant crack in the professions decades-old united front aimed at preventing experts from discussing the psychiatric aspects of politicians behavior. It will likely make many of its members feel more comfortable speaking openly about President Trumps mental health.
The impetus for the email was belief in the value of psychoanalytic knowledge in explaining human behavior, said psychoanalytic association past president Dr. Prudence Gourguechon, a psychiatrist in Chicago. We dont want to prohibit our members from using their knowledge responsibly.

Barry, I have the head of the APA on the phone and they have agreed to be a part of our Resistance effort.
There seems to be a definite lack of objectivity among psychiatrists today even though objectivity is central to the profession.
That was my first thought, too.
In my experience, nine out of ten psychiatrists are crazy.
They’ll probably rescind that notice, saying we were mistaken.....................
So, we're all fatheads?..............
‘Maxine Waters begs a comment or two...Pelosi, Schumer, Al Franken....Lieawatha......that guy that thought Guam might flip over.....definitely.’
A good list. He’s not in the news much, but I’d definitely add Patrick Leahy. I’ve been convinced he has mental health issues for over a decade.
They can comment, and by doing so, they will lessen their own influence. People aren’t as gullible as they used to be, ready to accept whatever spewed from some ‘doctor’s’ mouth, just because he or she has a Doctorate.
We already know about Dr. Spock, Dr. Kevorkian, and Dr. Timothy Leary.
pshychiatry is very subjective
Bottom line: The human brain is 90% phospholipids. Yet no one understands how those fats up there churn around to make possible the distinctive human higher intellectual functions that dictate behavior. The American Psychiatric Association are merely observers and dabble in various chemicals some of which do alter human thought. They have always been a bit pompous and have had no reluctance to advance a leftist agenda.
The same.
If any offer an opinion of Trump’s mental state he can sue them for either:
- HIPAA violation
- Malpractice - offering a medical opinion without actually evaluating the patient
of the 3 Leary had more credibllity.....if that’s possible
Bring it on! I’ve already started my list - and it gets longer with each passing day!
They should be worrying much more about MY mental state.
Seriously worrying.
If another civil war breaks out in the United States, there will be no “rules of engagement.”
No prisoners taken.
No mercy rendered.
No quarter given - or expected.
“So, we’re all fatheads?”
Fathead was my mother’s favorite nickname for me. I consider it a badge of honor.
I am sure they had a gag order when Obama was in power, what has changed....
It has been so many years, I cannot remember the source of the report, but there was at least one study, decades ago, as to the high percentage of practitioners in the mental health field, who had been drawn into it, in an effort to find “help” for their own problems. Their own mental health doubts were a mega level more serious than those of a random sample of the general population.
