I believe they can recover data with lasers even if the discs are utterly defunct and immobile.

Probably if just smashed with a hammer but if wanded over with a handy dandy TIG torch the once shiny disc is rendered into a lump of Rococo slag.

Which is why if I ever had to do such a thing - it would be smash, major magnet applied to the internals, separate and distribute parts across a geography....

We generally utilize a rifle round when we “smash” hard drive. A 6 pound trigger pull beats a 6 pound hammer for this task.
