The Trump administration is readying for a crackdown on marijuana users under Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
President Trumps Task Force on Crime Reduction and Public Safety, led by Sessions, is expected to release a report next week that criminal justice reform advocates fear will link marijuana to violent crime and recommend tougher sentences for those caught growing, selling and smoking the plant.
Sessions sent a memo in April updating the U.S. Attorneys Offices and Department of Justice Department (DOJ) component heads on the work of the task force, which he said would be accomplished through various subcommittees. In the memo, Sessions said he has asked for initial recommendations no later than July 27.
Task Force subcommittees will also undertake a review of existing policies in the areas of charging, sentencing, and marijuana to ensure consistency with the Department's overall strategy on reducing violent crime and with Administration goals and priorities, he wrote.
Criminal justice reform advocates fear Sessionss memo signals stricter enforcement is ahead.
The task force revolves around reducing violent crime and Sessions and other DOJ officials have been out there over the last month and explicitly the last couple of weeks talking about how immigration and marijuana increases violent crime, said Inimai Chettiar, director of the Brennan Center's Justice Program.

Or maybe REAL conservatives who think the government should butt out and let people live their lives. Anyone who thinks marijuana leads to violent crime is delusional.
“Trump is a teetotaler on alcohol and drugs. Does anyone have evidence that he does not approve of this policy?”
Is there evidence that Trump does approve? As far as Sessions running with Trump’s policies, Trump said two or three days ago he wouldn’t have appointed him if he’d known he would recuse himself.
Really?
I know that in the past month, I have seen AT LEAST four mattresses and a couple of pillows with the tags removed, and Sessions goes after marijuana users?
Geez!
A good idea but there are bigger fish to fry Jeff.
Then call your Congress critters and tell them you need the 'law' changed... What is it with people who claimed they are for 'law and order' and them belly ache when that is exactly what they get. Obama is a pot head... look where he took US.
Trump ruled out any pursuit of Hillary back in November. Does anyone have evidence that he has changed his mind and Sessions is simply not doing as Trump wants?
This was not a Sessions decision back in November, weeks before he was even confirmed.
Let’s finally admit it. Sessions has no interest in draining the swamp. He is one of the DC Swamp dwellers himself! That’s why he doesn’t want to go after the politicians and lobbyists who are ruining us. Pot smokers are not the ones selling us out to the highest bidders around the world Mr. Sessions? Gees, what a disappointment this guy has been. I want to see this man fired or forced to resign by the end of the week.
One can be a teetotaler and disagree wholeheartedly with this nation's wasteful War on Drugs and AG Session's "Back to the 80s" embrace of failed reefer madness drug warrior programs.
This wasn't what I voted for when I voted for Trump and it certainly wasn't what he ran on.
From PolitiFact
In a radio interview with WWJ Newsradio 950 in Michigan on March 8, 2016, Trump said "I think it certainly has to be a state I have not smoked it its got to be a state decision I do like it, you know, from a medical standpoint it does do pretty good things. But from the other standpoint, I think that it should be up to the states."
At a campaign rally in Sparks, Nevada on Oct. 29, 2015, Trump said: "The marijuana thing is such a big thing. I think medical should happen right? Dont we agree? I think so. And then I really believe we should leave it up to the states. It should be a state situation ... but I believe that the legalization of marijuana other than for medical because I think medical, you know I know people that are very, very sick and for whatever reason the marijuana really helps them - but in terms of marijuana and legalization, I think that should be a state issue, state-by-state."
So if Trump approves of this, it is in opposition to policies he took on the campaign trail.
And Sessions gets Bucks from the Prison Industry.
I have evidence that Trump is the president and that the AG is appointed by the president and the president, being the chief executive of the US, can very much set priorities for his cabinet members and their agencies.
I agree totally. Only one of the swamp creatures would come up with doing this. This is a move to infuriate a great deal of people and turn some of the base against this Administration. This is totally a swamp move.
“Not everyone agrees, and that’s fine w moi. That said, I happen to agree that marijuana increases crime, and it messes up a lot of young folks and sends them down the wrong path.”
Yep.
There’s a reason the left and liberals have promoted dope smoking so hard for so long.
“Sessions is not a war time Consigliere”.
He certainly doesn’t appear to be.
But Obama let violent criminals deal pot!
This is so mean to enforce these laws against them!
I thought that illegal drugs were the responsibility of the DEA?
I’ll give Sessions an A for effort, but he needs to focus on more urgent priorities.
Priorities like subversion by vindictive democrat witch hunts conducted by avowed leftists like mueller and comey.
P.S. This will really endear Trump to young voters.
“Booze does way worse. You think we should bring Prohibition back?”
New Left propaganda from the 60’s.
You never smoked pot, did you?
And I guess the “Gun” is responsible for firearms deaths too, is that it? Get a clue, causation is not attributable to coincidence. Canibis is and has been a God given plant to all. It has been proven that its use can provide relief to many who suffer. Sessions needs to focus on the “Big Rocks”!
