Swiss police say they've identified two bodies found among an Alpine glacier as a couple missing for nearly 75 years.
Valais canton police said Wednesday that forensic experts using DNA analysis identified them as Marcelin Dumoulin and his wife, Francine. They were 40 and 37, respectively, when they disappeared on Aug. 15, 1942.
The couple's daughter, now 79, has said her parents set off on foot to feed their animals but never returned.
Police were alerted on Friday to the bodies on the Tsanfleuron glacier at 2,615 metres above sea level.
Regional police have a list going back to 1925 of missing people.
They note that, because of climate change, bodies of people missing for decades regularly emerge from receding glaciers.
Actually, the glacier flowed down hill to warmer altitude and the surface melted
Glacial flow....... gravity happens
This is wild. I was just up in Canada, eh, and they said glaciers can basically spit out people via the water channels running deep below. Usually dead and frozen, but I think people have even survived falling down a crevasse and getting spit out immediately.
I doubt it’s anything new b/c of climate change, though. Probably just not recorded hundreds of years ago.
Isn’t this a plot line from Captain America?
The daughter was 4 at the time of the disappearance so “feeding the animals” is what she’d been told. Looks more like a hold mu beer moment or something worse.
And here I thought one of them was going to be Walt Disney
A passenger plane surfaced in the Andes a couple of years ago that had crashed 50 years earlier———glaciers move, that’s what they do.
,
The empty wine bottle at the foot of one of the corpses could make it more “Here, Liebchen, hold the cork”.
Yup, glaciers move alright. See Yosemite valley.
Louis Agassiz, the scientist who discovered evidence for the ice age, could have told anyone this. Before he left his native Switzerland, the people who lived near glaciers told him that if somebody falls into a crevasse, his body will come out the end of the glacier, and you can predict when that will happen.
You can see time lapsed photography of glaciers moving all of the time.
Imagine what is at the bottom of those mile deep walls of ice and snow. This example literally scratches the surface.
An Air Force C-124 Globemaster that crashed in 1952 recently emerged from a glacier here in Alaska.
They refuse to note that because glaciers MOVE things, the bodies were likely carried miles in the intervening years to the end of the glacier, which is about where it was seventy years ago.
Yeah, but I am having second thoughts about glaciers, if they attacked a couple.
