His unhinged rants are nowhere near funny and usually dont even make sense.

I quit picking on Dave as I’ve become convinced that his mental issues are real and quite serious.
I’m so old I remember when he was hilarious.
I saw old Dave at a small town in Montana.
He was chasing a pig and yelling, “Somebody grab my dog before he gets run over!”
I never forgave him for having WJC as a guest on 9/11/2002...
He started showing signs about 20+ years ago. And it has progressed into full blown crazy in recent years.
Me too, but I think his crazy old coot stage started about 20 years ago when he started getting so angry and bitter.
And what a father figure, having a young boy and looking like a scary old hobo for most of his boy’s childhood.
Self-centered jerk.
Like an old leftard, he has “progressed” into not hiding his true colors. I can’t stand any of these late night comedians.
Too funny.
This is the result of years of denial and cognitive dissonance culminating in catastrophic dissociative disorder.
His morning show was quite a hoot.
Judging from the blurb it sounds like he hasn’t changed a bit.
He never accepted getting passed over by Johnny Carson for “The Tonight Show”, in favor of Jay Leno.
It’s the “Al Gore Loser Syndrome”, they all go nuts and fight for ambiguous causes.
Robert Osborne would host the show with frequent guest hosts, mostly Alec Baldwin. Now that Osborne has passed away, Baldwin seems to have taken over. A few weeks ago, Baldwin had Letterman on as his "expert" co-host, and the following week he had Tina Fey as his "expert."
Neither showed the deep knowledge of the careers of the people involved in the movies they were showing, which was what made the pre- and post-movie chatter on that show worthwhile.

Dave essentially gave up when Jay Leno blew past him in the ratings in 1995 and never looked back. Letterman deduced quickly that CBS wouldn’t dump him—even when he fell into third place behind ABC’s “Nightline.” So, he started phoning it in, and began catering to his inner liberal, while enjoying multiple dalliances with female members of his staff.
One final note on Crazy Dave. His fawning friends in the media turned Letterman’s departure into the long goodbye, while ignoring the long-term failure (the WaPo, oddly enough was the exception, labeling Letterman one of the biggest failures in TV history). He had every opportunity to claim the throne in late night, and blew it. Leno outworked him, both comically and strategically. Jay aimed his show at Middle America, knowing that the crazed liberal stuff wouldn’t work (at least back then). He beat Letterman like the proverbial rented mule while Letterman collected a huge check for mediocre results.
You may also recall that when Leno decided to hang it up, Letterman didn’t immediately follow with his own retirement notice. In fact, he tried to regain his footing and take on Jimmy Fallon. But when Fallon quickly established dominance over Dave, he elected to call it quits. Of course, there were rumors that CBS told Letterman he was welcome to stay, but they were reclaiming control of the 12:30 time slot and his next contract would be only a fraction of what he once made.
The thing that really must drive Letterman mad is that Colbert has doubled down on the crazed liberal routine and is routinely winning the time slot, something he could never do.
Was that way in H.S. too. I was there at the same time (Broad Ripple H.S., Naptown, IN)
How soon before we have to start calling him "Caitlyn"?
When I was younger, I really liked David Letterman. Back in the early 90’s watching his show at night was a great escape from the stresses of taking care of my sick mom. During her brief remission of 1996, I got tickets to his show and my best friend accompanied me on the trip from SC to NYC. Not even 10 minutes into the show I was devastated by how rude and nasty he was to the guys in the band and to those audience members who made the mistake of trying to ask him a question. After that night, I never watched his show again.
Chevy Chase and Alec Baldwin, same-same as Dave: bitter, angry and as crazy as partly=pithed white mice.
Umm... That phase began for Dave about two years before he retired.
