The parents of terminally-ill baby Charlie Gard have walked out of a High Court hearing to decide if he should undergo treatment.
Charlie's father Chris Gard stood up and said: "I thought this was supposed to be independent," as the couple left the courtroom about two hours into today's hearing.
Mr Gard and his partner Connie Yates are arguing they should be allowed to take give experimental treatment to their 11-month-old for a severe degenerative genetic disorder.
Specialists at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) in London, where Charlie is being cared for, say that Charlie has already suffered catastrophic brain damage and there is no prospect for any meaningful recovery.
They say further treatment may cause him pain and that life-support keeping Charlie alive should be stopped.

We are having dinner with a couple with whom we have been friends for three or four years. We met the wife quite by chance and it turned out she was facing the same Aortic Heart Valve replacement as my wife. She opted for a less invasive approach and had a mechanical valve installed. Recently, she ended up with and infection in that area. a “team of six doctors” were convened to “help decide what should be done.” Five of them said she should just go into hospice care and prepare to die. The sixth doctor disagreed. He said he felt that she could withstand the open-heart procedure to have a pig valve installed. As I said, we are having dinner with them tonight, about six weeks after her surgery and she has never felt better.
So I am left with only a great deal of anger toward five a$$hole doctors who placed so little value on this woman’s life that they just told her to go home and prepare to die. Same goes for Charlie Gard. He may or may not survive the treatment being offered here, but he should not be denied that right by another group of a$$hole doctors who evidently have forgotten their oaths. Or some a$$hole Brit judge Neanderthal who can probably see through a keyhole with both eyes at the same time.
It goes further than just their ability to pay the bill. Once they step foot here it’s a different ballgame filled with specialists, attorneys, advocacy groups and yes our very own government. The child then COULD become a political pawn
If non-socialized drs who are not hell bent on seeing Charlie die agree that there is catastrophic brain damage, then fine, abandon the life support. But so far that’s not even close to having happened.
A lot of surviving British WWII veterans are asking the same question.
That’s fine. What you don’t seem to understand is that the brandy is on several life supporting systems. You can’t steal those. Without those the baby will die before it gets anywhere
Just how do you propose someone travel to the US with out proper passports
If a parent can't make the most intimate and personal decisions about trying to give their own baby a chance, however slim, then the state should just confiscate all babies at birth. There are states that did this very thing...Soviet Union, Mao's Red China, and Hitler's Germany. You are squarely on their side, whether or not you realize it.
There will NOT always be an England.
You kidding? Been to a hospital here lately? There are good and bad and I’ll tell ya there are facilities that want to push you out the door, insurance companies and attorneys in the mix trying to get you out and a hospital administration concerned only with the bottom line. I have relatives working in hospitals who get to see the dirty underbelly most do not know of or get to hear and some relatives who have had to undergo invasive surgery recently.
Trust me our hospitals are not a pulpit to stand from and proclaim Devine intervention
A country that builds a big aircraft carrier but has no planes to fly from it like the UK has done demonstrates its bankruptcy in areas other than moral ones.
No planes for an aircraft, no treatment options for seriously ill babies or people whose age is advanced etc. etc. because there is no money left.
But plenty of money to house invaders in luxury flats.
One thing a lot of people don’t know is how much $ has been raised for Charlie. It’s over a million pounds. Meaning, it not only wouldn’t cost the NHS a dime for Charlie’s US treatment: it would save them $. He’d be out of their hospital and out of their system.
Under such circumstances there’s only one reason to insist that the baby must die: power. The NHS wants godlike power, and that necessitates withholding even a smidgen of decision-making prerogatives from the parents.
First off, why in the world would we believe testimony from the same doctors who are refusing to release this baby to die at home?
Second, I have seen numerous statements from friends and family of the Gard’s stating that the baby is not on any pain relief medication, and no tests have been done to confirm that he is actually blind or deaf. I’ve read that he has brain damage but I haven’t read anything that says he’s in a vegetative state.
It’s no skin off your nose...why is it any of your business? Do you not believe the ultimate decision should be left to the parent’s?
Two points. Socialized medicine is built on the foundation of killing off any patient whose life is expensive to maintain. Socialized medicine is perpetually over-stretched anyway, so as soon as a patient begins to use more than their share of the communal pot, they need to die with dignity.
Second, as I pointed out in another post, Charlie’s cause has raised upwards of a million pounds. Hospitals in the US are not going to put the baby on the street when A, there’s plenty of ready cash for the bills, and B, more is being raised daily.
These self-important British bureaucrats have been fricking around with this decision since January. Little doubt that their incessant game playing and turf protecting has diminished the chances of Charlie’s benefiting from any treatment. But they should still allow his parents to remove him from that hospital and take him from treatment elsewhere.
The reason other hospitals would not take Charlie, aside from the advanced stages of his illness, is this is a case ripe for the parents to sue.....and be assured they have given every indication this will be forthcoming.
Then why have US drs been willing and eager to treat Charlie for months now? The Vatican hospital also wants him. Your scenario doesn’t explain the facts of the situation.
You haven't followed this story very well, have you?
Waging a holy political battle against socialized medicine with the backdrop of a child in a vegetative state is just as detestable
From what I understand, these parents have been trying for a long time to get their child help. Who knows how successful the treatment would have been if it had been given in a more timely manner, The fight may not help this particular child, but it may result in his ultimate death not being in vain if it exposes the destructive nature of socialized medicine.
Not to mention the fact that the "State", for fear of being defied, will not even allow this child to die in the peace of his own home.
Even if the proposed treatments fail, something may be learned that spares the lives of other children in the future. What’s to lose? Oh, right- government’s tight CONTROL of its subjects.
