I'm very sorry about the response time problems we've been having recently and now this page loading problem we're having today. I've called and left messages on John's phone, email, freepmail and facebook several times per day since Saturday. No luck. He seems to be off the grid. Don't know if he took a trip or his phone is broken, lost or turned off and he has no internet service in his new apartment or what, but I've been unable to reach him. Also do not have his new address. Hopefully, he'll check in soon and get it fixed. Don't mind telling you, I'm worried.
Meanwhile, until John finally checks in and gets it fixed, here's a temporary workaround:
At the top of the articles index page click: "Account" and then "My Preferences."
Set 20 messages per page
Set 20 results per page
Set them both to 20. You can change them back after John gets the problem fixed.

Prayers up.
Dejavu all over, again.
John is James Bond. But, please don’t tell anyone.
He’s also my partner (not an employee) and the guy who built this system (based on my original software design). I’m an old accounting applications programmer/analyst (dinosaur), not a techie, and I purposely (and foolishly) skipped the P/C generation. John was a born techie.
I’m glad it’s working for you. Made the 20/20 selection and I’m obviously logged on but no sidebar here.
Of course we do. And then Amazon/Google/Microsoft or whomever controls the cloud also controls the on/off button for the whole shebang. We don’t dare post anything that pisses them off. Hence, we keep trying to stay independent for as long as we possibly can, despite the tech problems.
HEADERS mode has the sidebar and you can post. I have my preferences set at 20 posts.
Sometimes it helps lag on my android device if I delete my chrome browser history, which will be stuffed with FR links.
Just throwing that out there as something I have experienced.
You don’t store much data on your servers other than text, but still it has to be a lot after 20 years. Could be an attack vector as well? Have bots search a bunch of known users or titles at the same time? There has been some sort of on going glitch. It hasn’t been a show stopper for me, but it has been annoying.
Have you all considered moving everything more than x years old (possibly 3 years to cover the previous election cycle on a rolling basis) to a read-only archive server with a separate search function? That might reduce some of the burden on the ‘active’ servers. I realize that it might break some links.
bttt
Jim, it is possible to have more that one server so there is a backup.
Wit respect, we need something more resilient than we’ve been using.
Aside from the problems we’re having here, I hope John is all right!
Met Yogi when I was I volunteer at Walter Reed during the Iraq war. A walking talking teddy bear. A life highlight.
Jim — hope John shows up and everything is fine. Prayers for ya.
Yes he was as is a good landlord.
I'm still thinking at least part of what is going on here, is that you've got network issues, or someone is actively attempting to inject badness into the mix. I've been seeing the reset and spurrious retransmit packets here for a while. I suspect that you have active attackers both on a governmental, and NGO level on this site.
You folks are doing amazing things on a shoestring budget with this site. Most folk out there reading this have no idea what it takes to maintain a site with this kind of traffic. I still love the clean and functional layout. I've been thinking for a while that you might need to work on a backend redesign, but I understand how much of a headache that is in every respect. I'd offer to help, but I'm not a code guy.
The 20/20 has improved the loading and search process.
The logfiles should point to the problem(s). Have you considered making use of some of the programmers/analysts/network gurus that frequent this site? Pro bono, of course. An extra set of eyeballs never hurts.
Hope you will hear from John soon and everything is aok with him..first concern.
