Why a Warming Arctic May Be Causing Colder U.S. Winters
National Geographic ^ | July 11, 2017 | By Sarah Gibbens

When a U.S. Republican senator threw a snowball onto the Senate floor in late February of 2015, he used it to underscore his belief that humanmade climate change was an alarmist conclusion. The snowball had been rolled from the capital grounds in Washington D.C., which, at the time, was experiencing an uncharacteristically cold winter.

If global warming was real, he postured, how could the nation's capital experience such severe cold?

Uncharacteristically cold winters, however, just might be one of the most hard felt effects of climate change, according to a study published in Nature Geoscience by a team of researchers.

The study found that unusually cold temperatures in northern North America and lower precipitation in the south central U.S. all coincided with periods of warmer Arctic weather.

To reach this conclusion, the researchers analyzed how teleconnections in the Arctic cause cooler winters in North America. Teleconnections are largescale weather anomalies that influence weather across continents and span large portions of the atmosphere.

Anna Michalak, a researcher at the Carnegie Institution for Science, was involved in creating the model that was used to collect data for the study's findings. She explained that the massive system of climate models, called CMIP5, creates a large dataset that allows researchers to study the interconnectedness between activity on Earth and the atmosphere.

While the specific repercussions of warmer Arctic seasons and the severity at which those repercussions will be felt requires further research, the study effectively underscores the interconnectedness of Earth's atmosphere.

Speaking about how human influence changes weather patterns, Machalak added, "Winters could be harsher; flooding is more intense; droughts are more frequent... By emitting greenhouse gasses, we're not just warming temperatures, we're perturbing the Earth's entire system."

Globull warming has to be the reason for any weather or climate event or it is discredited. Lack of sunspots are why we are having colder temperatures. That big hot ball in the sky is the main driver of our climate.

When the next Ice Age comes, these idiots will still blame global warming. It’s their religion, and they are steadfast believers.

Wtf, if we had warmer winter, you all know what they would say cause it
When we have colder winter they say the same thing
This is why I never believe this kind of sh)&t

The "warming Arctic" is colder than normal.

And Greenland recently recorded a 50-year low temperature.

I remember Time Mag had the issue about the killer ice age soon to come. I was a kid and it scared the crap out of me.

Schools now show Algorz BS propaganda piece Inconvenient Truth as if it's settled science and Algorz is the authority of it.

My observation is we get 2 warm-ish winters and then a *normal* one.

But I remember years when the zero and below temps arrived in November and clamped down the entire winter. Events like 19 straight days below zero in November and -35 in December and January.

Hope not to experience that this coming year.

we’ll adjust our models so that they can predict the past correctly.

That's actually the best way to create a model that works. The problem is that their models so far don't "predict" the past correctly. So they don't talk about the assumptions they've built in, and stay focused on their empty assertions and ad hominem arguments.

The study found that unusually cold temperatures in northern North America and lower precipitation in the south central U.S. all coincided with periods of warmer Arctic weather.

Cold fronts move south and warm fronts move north as they have been doing for thousands of years. Below normal temperatures in the south are usually accompanied by above normal temperatures in the north.

The study is a big stupid, government paid for, nothing.

Any of these Warming Arctic nuts ever been to the Arctic , when it’s cold it’s freezing and when it’s warmer you get eaten by bugs

“That’s actually the best way to create a model that works.”

It’s a start, but if the processes underlying the data are not properly understood, then they’ll never do better than to “predict” the past. As you suggest, they’re not even accomplishing that correctly.

I’m old enough to remember when National Geographic was a scientifically trustworthy organization. That was long, long ago, before it threw rationalism aside and became a full-throated feel-good environmental advocacy bullhorn. Sad.

Sixty years ago I read that if you exploded a nuclear bomb in the Arctic the winters would be much colder and wetter.

I mentioned that where I worked, forty years ago, and they laughed me to scorn.
Now I feel vindicated. think I will dig up my old boss and laugh in his face.

My theory is that global warming is causing there to be a spike in the number of ju-ju bugs being birthed and that the increase in the number of wing flaps associated with that spike in ju-ju bugs is adding additional large scale turbulence to the atmosphere thereby causing the typical Arctic air mass to move south and the typical North American air mass to move north.

Just by way of comparison to the snowball story, another US Senator rigged a similar stunt by holding a hearing on a hot, humid day and turning OFF the A/C at a hearing. That was Al Gore in 1988 when the Arctic was doomed to melt in a few years.

December here was cold as a Hillarys t*t

But after the first of the year, the ground frost left and never returned.

The ice fishermen got just a few days in the bays in late Dec.

Been working outside for 45 years. In our business, 6 inches of frost is a Godsend, compared to mud. 4 years ago, we had 18” of frost.

The Global Warming Theory is an extremely robust scientific theory. Every observation of everything offers absolute proof of the Global Warming Theory. The ancient Romans had similar science. They could divine the future by observing goat entrails. Goat entrails also offer absolute proof of Global Warming.
