At least five people are dead after a military transport plane crashed in Mississippi, according to reports.
The plane came down early Monday evening, sending plumes of black smoke billowing into the air above a field near Moorhead, northwest of Jackson.
Sheriff Ricky Banks told the Clarion-Ledger that at least five people had died on the aircraft, believed to be carrying nine.

It must have been a catastrophic failure. That looks like a peanut field and a C-130 could normally land there.

The Marine Corps posted on Twitter Monday evening that the plane was a K-130, a tanker version of C-130 transport planes that is used for refueling in-air.

I wouldn’t know, but what you say sounds reasoned to me.
I’d agree with your take on it.
Sure hate seeing things like this.

They used to have a large ANG transport unit at Jackson. Surprised that it is out of Memphis instead of Jackson.

In the early 60s I saw a firepower demonstration on Eglin AFB.
One of the fascinating events was a C-130 came in low then landed in a brush covered field. He reversed props and stopped, then reversed them again and took off in that field.
I am not sure a KC-130 could do that but can’t think of why not.

That is probably right. Still not a problem for a C-130 to land in I would think.

Impressive. Would seem impossible to me.
I guess those props are made tough.

I mourn the loss of one of my beloved KC-130s and her crew. There are men and women who embrace danger in their flight duties so that we can sleep secure at night. God bless and keep them and their loved ones.

I don’t know for sure but I think they do not reverse the direction the props are spinning. They turn the angle of the blades.
