NFL Experiences Softer Than Expected Demand for Advertising Season After Colin Kaepernick’s Protest

After a nearly double-digit ratings freefall last year, the NFL experiences a lighter than expected demand for advertising buys for the upcoming season.

“A number of factors have conspired to cast a bit of a pall over this year’s NFL market, which some insiders say is the softest since the Great Recession of 2008,” Ad Age points out. “For example, a number of marquee clients have slashed their pro football spend, while a few load-bearing categories aren’t committing anywhere near as many dollars to the NFL as they did a year ago.

A source for Ad Age estimates a two percent to four percent increase in the price of commercials. Declines in demand for advertising from automobiles, movies

NFL ratings declined by nine percent in 2016.

Penalties for hits once considered clean, rules largely negating the excitement of kick returns, referee involvement slowing the pace of the game, the suspension of Tom Brady for four games and the retirement of Peyton Manning, and players making a political football of football all come up as reasons for the ratings drop.

A resurgent Dallas Cowboys, the New England Patriots looking to extend their dynasty after winning one of the most exciting Super Bowls in history, and Colin Kaepernick promising to end his protest should he find a suitor in free agency all give the league hope for a turn-around in 2017.

People need an escape from politics.

When the NFL becomes politicized, fans will turn away from it.

Why are SO many men running away from society to video games?

Because it’s mostly non-politicized and excludes most forms of feminism, SJW-type content.

I am an NFL fan. Packers are my team. But I have to admit feeling a down turn in my interest like many others.

I watched the NHL playoffs extensively this year and had more fun watching sports than I have had in years. I like their product.

Without Colon, I can now go back to being the long-time 49ers fan I’ve always been. A 2-14 season is nothing compared to having him on the team. Good riddance, Colon.

Marketing 101 - Ticking off a sizable percentage of your customer base is not a strategy for success.

Charles Barkley — who is a freaking NBA announcer — showed up at one of the games in the Stanley Cup finals and was interviewed briefly by an NBC reporter in the stands. He said he was a big hockey fan, and the Stanley Cul playoffs were so much better than the NBA playoffs this year. LMAO.

Does anyone think Kaepernick can undo the damage he’s caused? Or the 49ers and NFL for supporting his ‘free expression’ of his anti-USA hatred?

Man the NFL is a confused entity.

Kapernick promises to be good... ha ha ha.

For all that money he was getting, he couldn’t be good.

I am a huge fan of Charles Barkley. That giant, magnificent bastard tells it like it is.

Same here re the 49ers. I refused to cheer for them last year so long as Kaepernick remained on the roster. I’m not 100% sure he won’t end up back there.

If you live where there is no winter ...the NFL is not as important as up North..

NFL should tell them if you cannot stand do not come on the field..

I’ll be happy to start watching the NFL again. In fact, I’ll try to watch any game this season that Tebow starts.

Colin Kaepernick promising to end his protest should he find a suitor in free agency

Mister "principle" is now mister sellout to his cause. Being a greedy capitalist (good thing) now becomes more important than his stupid "protest." Ha, Ha! I think if he stood up and sang the National Anthem in tears, it wouldn't help him.

two percent to four percent increase in the price of commercials.

Ratings down by nine per cent? and they want to raise prices? Not exactly marketing geniuses are they?

It’s blacks. People love the game for what they’ve done for it. Now Colon takes it away. Think O.J., Michael Vick-I’m sure there’s more. But then the number of blacks who have been able to help themselves dwarfs the knuckleheads out there. Maybe the success stories should speak out more. No, that would be selling out.

Hoping for Kaepernick to sav e their bacon by recanting? Fugeddaboutit. The NFL has a far more serious problem: Overexposure, underexcitement, and political blight that wont go away. IOW many games are boring and not worth watching on ESPN channels anyway.
