On TV today, Ollie North said we’d turn NK in to a Pop Tart.

Just keep your head firmly buried in the sand, insisting that the US is immune from any threats. The horrific events predicted in Revelation will happen whether you want it to or not.

So you admit that the US electronic infrastructure is vulnerable, yet fail to recognize the utterly horrendous consequences of an attack upon our electronic grid? How many of us would survive when the lights, power, water, were instantly cut off, our cars wouldn’t start, and our local grocery store was shut down?

“And I have no doubt we’d win such a war provided the Chinese don’t wade in with troops. But the cost in American and South Korean lives would be huge. Just my opinion.”

We would not be having this problem if President Truman would have let General MacArthur finish the North Korean invasion problem back in 1950-1953. General MacArthur wad all the way up to the Yalu River dividing North Korea from China and was stopped. Now what is it going to cost besides a whole hell of lot more lives. Reminds me of what General George Patton said, That he didn’t want to pay twice for the same re-estate.

First, I do not believe NK has the capability of a large scale EMP attack.

Secondly, I believe your listed scenario of the effects of a large scale EMP attack is greatly over exaggerated. Will, there be problems, yes. But I do not see the doomsday level of problems as you indicate.

Thus, the grid needs to be updated to avoid potential problems, even though I do not see the doomsday level as some would like to promote.

Also, don’t forget humans have a great ability to adapt and survive should your doomsday scenario come to pass.

Hope that helps.

Can we agree that the US electronic infrastructure must be protected?

And it’s 90% bullshit.

The major population centers in the USA, like NYC, LA, SF, etc, would be hardest hit.

If there's no electricity, there's no way to treat waste water and pump clean water. And then there's the JIT supply model for food in these cities. There's probably just 2 to 4 days worth of food on the shelves. And if there's no electricity, then perishable foods go bad, and there's no gasoline or diesel fuel to ship food and other supplies into the city.

It could get really ugly in the population centers very quickly.

>> Either an EMP or a massive solar event (ala Carrington Event) would send the US back into the 19th century <<

Agreed completely. And by the way, I think we can add the threat of a massive cyber attack to that same category.

In any case, fifty years ago my work assignment delved briefly into the effects of nuclear weapons. I can assure you that many of our top scientists and military officers knew all about EMP back in those days of 1966-67.

But yet, the Congress and the various POTUSES have done virtually nothing since then to protect our highly vulnerable civilian systems, even as we have become more and more and more dependent on electrical networks — that is, networks for both power and infomation.

Given today’s triple threats to the national power grid — EMP, Carrington and cyber-sabotage — I’ve gotta doubt whether our civilization can survive for another fifty years if our leaders don’t soon do massive amounts of serious work on preventive measures.

Thank you - why do so many on this board have their heads in the sand regarding this potential threat?

One would think some of the so-called 'stimulus' money that 0bama and his 'Rats pushed for in 2009 would have been used to harden the electrical grid against such an event.

Yep - money went to walkin' around slush funds... gotta keep those democrats happy on the plantation.

A ‘large scale’ (to use your term Franklin) EMP attack is ONE nuclear weapon exploded a hundred miles above Denver.

ONE

ONE weapon.

And yes, within 18 months North Korea will be able to do that - and if North Korea sells it's technology to other rogue States or Terrorist Groups the act becomes a statistical certainty.

I dunno. I see a lot of food walking around every day.

How many “””above ground tests””” of nukes were conducted in the 50’s and 60’s in Nevada ......? When the first nuke was set off in NM did the surrounding communities lose power ? Did Las Vegas lose power or radio / TV ?

It has to be at a certain height to acheive the Compton scattering effect.

Tell me the trick.

There was a Starfish test that was testing EMP, I remember.
