Education and income make a difference. Nearly nine in ten Americans with a college education or income above $50,000 are able to identify Great Britain as the country from which the United States won its liberty. Of note, white Americans, 84%, are also more likely than Latino residents, 70%, or African Americans, 53%, to correctly identify Great Britain. Although race is a factor, its importance is exaggerated by differences in education and income among ethnic groups. Interestingly, age makes little difference. Curious about other countries that get mentioned? asks Dr. Lee M. Miringoff, Director of The Marist College Institute for Public Opinion. Thirteen other countries get tabbed as the country from which the United States gained its independence. A scattering of people mention France, Mexico, and Germany among the longer list of countries. At least one person surveyed mentioned Afghanistan, Brazil, Canada, China, Columbia, Denmark, Italy, Japan, Panama, or Russia.

Public schools = fail.
Afghanistan? That had to be a wise guy answering the question.
Yeah, some jesters there. I probably would have done something similar, since npr/pbs polls are garbage.

FAIL - Americans Don't Know Why We Celebrate 4th of July! -- A CONVERSATION WITH THE GENERAL PUBLIC
Americans Don't Know WHY We Celebrate the 4th of July or WHAT COUNTRY We Declared Independence From!
This was Mohammed’s secret land, it’s only right for them to take it over now. < /s >
Someone could have answered, "We gained our independence from Kenya on November 8, 2016."
Unfortunately, that failure is intentional.
The public has been so propagandized by these various arms of the "movement" that only the most astute and diligent seekers for truth have been able to discern the degree to which education policy and control have been nationalized and enforced.
As a result the cult-like mentality of "Progressivism" has infiltrated and infected the "public square."
If you REALLY want to be depressed, check out today’s Google doodle...it has a bunch of red-trimmed forest critters, red stripes on skeletal pine trees, and a star-spangled blue sky. Washington? Never heard of him. Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness? What have you been smokin’, dude? /sarcasm
Sorry but I do not believe this. The folks I know that are my age or older know a lot more than the younger folks, and this transcends ethnicity.
Give any FReeper 15 minutes and the ability to control the curriculum and this would be on the right track.
That’s probably another fact that is locked up with all of his other hidden information and documents.
Or not. Jesse Watters asked people questions, and one of the questions was when did America declare independence, and the young man’s answer was 1984. Just for the record he was white and I would say in his early 20’s. If he had said 1980, I would have given him partial credit as we regained some of our independence when Reagan was elected. 8>)
My kids are grown but if I had kids today I’d work 3 jobs if I had to in order to afford private schools.
And even that has to be researched as some private schools take gov money and have to conform to gov curriculum.
These lamentable results are mostly due to the establishment of the FEDERAL Dept. of Education 1979 / Carter. Once the FEDERAL G'ment left wing elitists were able to dictate standars, all discipline and local control went out the window.
The only positive is the emergence of Home Schooling. This may prove positive for the country but it will take at least 10-20 more years to manifest iteself.
And don’t forget,
THEY ALL CAN VOTE!
