For many years, whenever one Googled jihad, Jihad Watch was the first result. This was back in the days when Googles results were based on the relevance of the subject matter to the search and the popularity of the site. But then Google began engaging in social engineering, attempting to manipulate opinion by changing the results of searches to lead people to sites that offered the perspectives it favored. Then when one searched for jihad, Jihad Watch became the second result, and then the fourth, even though our readership was steadily rising; replacing it at the top were Islamic apologetics sites with a fraction of the readership, offering soothing falsehoods about the meaning of jihad. Marc explains this phenomenon in greater detail here.
That manipulation wasnt enough to divert people away from the truth. Now, if you search for jihad, Google will give you a whole page full of Islamic apologetics, and Jihad Watch doesnt appear on the front page at all. Is this because our readership has plummeted? No, quite the contrary. It is because Google is now fully committed not to allowing people to search the Internet, but to controlling what they find when they do. (Incidentally, when one Googles Robert Spencer now, the Southern Poverty Law Centers hit piece on me comes up before my own website bio.)
On June 24, the Huffington Post ran a piece entitled Google Search Is Doing Irreparable Harm To Muslims, about Texas imam Omar Suleimans effort to compel Google to edit out search results he deemed anti-Muslim (not false, just anti-Muslim). I commented: If Omar Suleiman gets his way, Google will only return Sharia-compliant results, and another battle against the imposition of Sharia blasphemy laws upon the West will have been lost.

I just now searched “jihad” on google, and jihadwatch.com was the fourth or fifth listing on the first page.
OUTSTANDING post. Thanks, Jacquerie.
HOORAY Robert Spencer! Researching the “search” engines. Full speed ahead. At this time 241 years past Independence Day...
FReedom of thought ALERT! Creeping Totalitarianism. Domestic enemies ALERT!
In my jihadwatch search in the Google box...Jihad Watch - Exposing the role that Islamic jihad theology and ...
came up at the top of the page.
I googled on my work computer which isn’t used for politics (in case they were tailoring results), and Spencer came up 5th. I’d like to think that some left-wing weenie there was trying to be cute, but Google management understands just how important it is to keep politics out of their core business (as Target and JC Penny had to learn the hard way).
Try putting in just “jihad”...
>I just now searched jihad on google, and jihadwatch.com was the fourth or fifth listing on the first page.
Looks like google just reverted it. They often do so when called out for shaping search results politically. I often end up using bing when searching on political tops due to google’s silent censorship.
OK, Jihad Watch was 1st page, 6th item down.
Since google has already reverted Jihadwatch back to normal, let me give you an example of a site google has censored.
vault co is a conspiracy theory blog written by a game named Texas Arcane that I’ve enjoyed reading over the years. Do not take this guy seriously. However I noticed a few years ago that google no longer displayed his site in it’s index.
Here’s the search for vault co at duck duck go:
https://duckduckgo.com/html?q=vault%20co
The first entry will be: http://vault-co.blogspot.com/
Then search for vault co at google:
https://www.google.com/#q=vault+co
The only entries that come up are sites attacking his blog. Though why anyone cares about his blog is beyond me as he doesn’t have many readers.
Since both Duck Duck Go and google use the same search data this means that google has this guy’s blog on some kind of censorship list, just like they had jihadwatch before they complained about it.
Sites that spoke the truth regarding what God's Word says about the subject suddenly were relegated to page 4, 5, or 6, and sites that attempted to justify homosexuality with Scripture were moved to page 1.
Like this one:
GOOGLE uses the search engine to push what they
want to “sell”. Therefore, the EU fined them billions.
HERE, they sell terrorism, and their ‘sell-out’ of
the US Constitution, and Freedom.
Jihad searches do not put JihadWatch at first
Break up Google ! They created a terrific business and abused the power that went along with it. Now they deserve what they get.
You should have seen the nasty results I received when googling for a magnetic MAGA bumper sticker for my truck.
Ok, we’re all getting the same, that’s good. The idea, of course, is that JihadWatch gets listed as an option for people trying to understand “jihad” (which is not too hard to understand...but I guess it is for some people).
When I put in ‘republic’, FreeRepublic is nowhere to be seen.
Fourth link.
What google ought to do is give you choice.
Put about 5 buttons on the top of the search page. These buttons are sorting mechanisms.
Sort by [Popularity] [Content] etc... or something like that. That way, if you want to find what is “trending” you can do that, or simply do a word or content search.
As a side-note, Jihad Watch used to be one of my favorite sites to go to. I also ran an anti-islam website named ROPMA (Religion Of Peace My Ass!) so I appreciated what Jihad Watch did very much. I need to visit there again. I recall it being a very well run and researched site "back in the day" ... I hope it's as well run today.
